Yesterday morning, a 77-year-old Queens man walking in Chinatown was injured when he seemingly fell into the path of a police cruiser. Tong Hong had been walking with his adult daughter at Canal and Broadway and tripped on his flip-flops, sending him into the windshield of the cruiser.
Hong was bleeding profusely, and the Daily News says there was a "basketball-sized, spider-web crack on the driver's side windshield." However, one witness thought that the cruiser actually clipped Hong, who was at the corner, but the police say the cruiser was moving slowly. And another told NY1, "I saw the old man walking and he slipped and that's it. The car was driving like five miles an hour." Witnesses say the police helped Hong, and in fact, the Post has a picture of a cop holding napkins to Hong's head.
Hong is in critical condition at St. Vincent's. Canal is a street teeming with pedestrians and vehicular traffic, what with the bridge and tunnel crossings. Transportation Alternatives' shows many pedestrian fatalities along Canal between 1995 and 2001 on a map.

(not related to this particular story, but related nonetheless.)
pedestrian's on canal: bicycles are traffic too. if they have the right of way, don't cross in front of them. bicycles are very real, and very solid.
thanks.
chinatown huh?
at least there will be plenty of napkins to use for cleanup
ah, a cop car hitting a pedestrian...how many times have you and/or someone you know been cut off by a cop car? i've heard countless stories of people almost being hit by cops being careless. i once got door-ed by a cop while on my bike and fell into the street, and all they did was laugh. it's a shame that the one who got really hurt this time was an elderly man.
damn cops, they are a careless driving bunch.
I can believe it. People are always creeping and crowding into the streets when they shouldn't. It drives me crazy... Just think of the time you save by walking 5 ft into the Street to get a head start. Totally worth the opportunity to get your foot ran over isn't it?
The guy was 77. The pavement and sidewalks around Canal Street are post-apocalyptically torn up and uneven. I'll bet any money that the cop car was speeding, and not on the way to any kind of emergency.
cop was driving too close to the curb, something of a rarity in manhattan since there's usually parked cars by the curb taking up one lane of traffic.
(parked cars on both sides of a street leaving only the two center lanes for moving traffic)
injured pedestrian slipped on the curb causing his fall head first onto a car's windshield.
Cop was driving too close to the curb when the victim slipped off the curb and hit the windshield.
the fact that the cop car was driving on a lane usually seen with parked cars is a rarity in manhattan. (usually see a 4 lane road with the two center lanes for moving traffic or double parkers)
number six is sort of correct, was the cop car going to any sort of emergency? why the far left lane?
That's why that nigga didn't deliever my food today.
^ oh shut the fuck up.
Hey you, ^^^ Suck my africanized dick.
