Airline Passenger Bill of Rights for New York

Governor Spitzer signed airline passenger bill of rights legislation that will ensure that passengers on delayed flights in NY State airports are "provided with basic customer protections." Spitzer said, "As a major international travel hub, it is our duty to take the lead in adopting measures that will ease air travel for passengers."

The bill, backed by Queens Assemblyman Michael Gianaris and Long Island State Senator Charles Fuschillo, will "require airlines to have snacks and water, fresh air and power, and working restrooms for passengers on planes that leave the gate and sit on the tarmac or more than three hours." Or, as Gianaris put it, "New York has the most delayed airports anywhere, and people are paying hundreds of dollars right now to be treated like garbage."

The bill was created in response to the many high-profile incidents of airlines keeping passengers in planes, like what many Jet Blue passengers endured on Valentine's Day (pictured). Of course, the next step might be ways to figure out how airports can handle all the flights (NYC does have the worst airport delays), but we'll settle for planes not being too close to each other.

Jet Blue also instituted a Customer Bill of Rights, which offers reimbursements depending on delays or cancellations.

Jetblue is the only airline I refuse to fly now. Valentine's day was bad but last weekend was an utter horror too. I've never seen such mean and rude employees in all my life.

plus, they sponsor FOX "News" and Bill O'Reilly . . .they're not getting my money

Air Jamaica is pretty bad too. This spring I had a 4 hour delay, where we were taxiing for 3 hours, then had to go back to the terminal to refuel. They didn't even give us any information, and they must have the worst flight attendants ever. They would talk back to us whenever anyone asked a question. Do not fly Air Jamaica, no matter what.

I have a feeling that the airlines are going to challenge this thing in court if forced to pay out, claiming that the federal government is the only one that can regulate them.

i cant beleive they can get away with imprisonment like that

[2] You're an idiot. They don't sponsor Bill O'Reilly. They sponsored the DailyKos convention and were taken to task for it on Bill O'Reilly.

As for airing FOX, they merely have a contract with LiveTV.

That Spitzer condones keeping passengers confined for 3 hours under any conditions is outrageous. Let them deplane you boobs.

Airlines don't keep passengers in planes. They can't open the doors and unload passengers on the taxiway.

I've been stuck in highway traffic for hours at a time. That's no fun, either, but I bring some water and food with me and I get through it well enough.

It's amazing that I can pay as little as $99 and fly from one coast to the other in 5 hours. So I'm often delayed, sure; I take that opportunity to read a book or take a nap.

Sometimes people lack perspective.

And these rules will only mean higher fares. I'd rather airlines focus on operational safety and let passengers bring their own amenities.

how about allowing passengers to LEAVE THE PLANE if they are kept waiting for more than 3 hours.

whats wrong with sponsoring DailyKos?

I'm with #9. Screw the chips and water - I want a rolling staircase and a golf cart.

#8, very often these delays happen while the plane is still sitting at the gate.

All they would have to do is attach the accordion hallway to the plane.

They do not want to do this because then they would have to refund everyone. get real
