Pols Go After Tinted Vehicle Windows

2007_07_tinted.jpgLawmakers are looking to toughen laws around tinted windows on automobiles. Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum pointed out that police officer Russel Timoshenko was fatally shot when he approached a stolen SUV with tinted windows. And current State Senator Eric Adams (a retired police captain and a founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care) summed it up, "The criminal element does not use tinted windows to protect themselves from dangerous UV rays. They use them to protect their illegal activity."

The Daily News explains the current laws: Front and driver's side windows cannot allow less than 70% of light inside the car, while the passenger and rear windows can have darker tints. But many times, vehicles have too-tinted windows - in May, Busta Rhymes' Denali was pulled over for having excessively tinted windows.

Stricter laws would include $250 fines on tinted windows, fines on businesses that tint windows illegally, a ban on do-it-yourself-tinting kits, and tinted windows to be checked during inspections. City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. said, "If [the police are] approaching an opaque window, it's the same as breaking down the door of a crack house with a blindfold on."

i don't understand why they don't outlaw them outright and stop pussyfooting around the issue.
it should not only be a fine but those with tinted windows shouldn't be allowed to drive their cars again until they are changed. i'm sick of thugs hiding behind their tinted windows.

That's absolutely retarded. Tints don't kill people. Assholes with guns kill people.

I've never seen a police officer approach a vechicle with tints straight on from the side. You have the person in the car roll down the windows before you even get out of the cruiser.

Don't they teach them that in the academy like on day one?

Without my tints, how will I smoke weed and gamble while waving my pistol around wildly in my car without people all lookin up in my business and such?

When I lived in OK, tinted windows helped a lot during the summer. I'm sure it kept a lot of cars a little bit cooler today.
If they pass this tint law, pass it for all cars, no exceptions if you're a celebrity in limo.

Personally, I have tinted windows and I like the privacy they provide ! It's none of Ur business what I'm doing in my ride at a Red light ! It's none of Ur business what my girlfriends doing with her face in my crouch ! Seriously though, It's just another excuse to invade my privacy . Posted by; "Still Not Amused"

What's a crouch?

But Seriously, what about cops approaching a U-Haul truck? You can't see through trucks, maybe all trucks should be made of plexiglass so we can see what's in them.

It's like banning cell phones while driving, so I can't talk on the phone while driving but it is still ok to eat a big bowl of cereal or put on makeup which are just as distracting.

#2 was spot on.

Thank God I don't live in the city. I need tinted windows so my kid doesn't have a super hot carseat. That said if I drive into the city are the cops going to bust me over this?

Ban guns, not windows.

Better yet ban assholes with guns FOREVER not guns. We should kick anyone out of this country who kills a cop. Yes that's right, I propose stripping citizenship to even native born people who kill cops. Anyone with me on this one?

#10: no, you are on your own.
