Pencil This In
EVENT: "Home Buying for Hipsters" would like to help out all of you "creative non-traditional wage earners" during your quest to own a home. Buying property is an art, after all, so creatives may even have a head start! They "aim to specifically address your concerns and break down the process into steps you can understand." Their classes are free and open to everyone ("hipsters, non-hipsters, art stars, rock stars, designers, freelancers, sculptors, poets, part-time geniuses, business moguls, cheapskates, high rollers, nerds, players, winners, losers=whoever is ready to own a home!") More info at their MySpace page, of course.
6:30 to 8pm // Sheep Station [149 4th Ave, Park Slope] // Free
MOVIE: The 1953 Dr. Seuss musical film, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, will be playing at the Socrates Sculpture Park tonight. The story covers "the perils of coerced collective labor, a thinly veiled metaphor for Ruskie economics" by telling the tale of Bart Collins and "his evil, authoritarian piano teacher, Dr. T, who is trying to enslave 500 little boys to play a gigantic piano. Teams of shirtless musicians parade around tooting on fantastical instruments, like a psychedelic Busby Berkeley show. This sterling example of Eisenhower-era psychic repression was filmed in glorious Technicolor."
7pm // Socrates Sculpture Park [32-01 Vernon Blvd, LIC] // Free
MUSIC: Mercury Lounge welcomes Cassettes Won't Listen, 1990s, The Frequency and Cruel Black Dove to the stage tonight. 1990s are a Scottish band who say: "they play rock and roll like a blonde gets out of a car." Seems pretty accurate!
You're Supposed to be My Friend.mp3 - 1990s
7:30pm // Mercury Lounge [217 E Houston St] // $10
THEATER: Tom Crean (1877 – 1938) was an Irish Antarctic explorer who survived several famous expeditions with big shots like Scott and Shackleton. He was part of the famous Endurance expedition that survived for months trapped on ice floes after their ship was crushed; to save the day Crean journeyed with Shackleton 800 miles in a lifeboat to the South Sandwich Island of South Georgia, where they scaled uncharted glaciers and returned with help – during the Antarctic winter – to rescue their stricken mates left behind. Sort of puts our morning commute in perspective. Chill out with more stories about Crean’s harrowing adventures during Aidan Dooley’s solo show, called Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer. The Village Voice’s Alexis Soloski calls it “a gritty narrative, and yet a deeply romantic one.” - John Del Signore
8pm // Irish Repertory Theater [132 W 22nd St] // Call 212-727-2737 for tickets
SCIENCE: “It’s Hot, Hot, Hot” is the theme at Union Hall's Secret Science Club tonight. Global warming expert William Schlesinger will be on hand, which is a good thing since he's "one of the nation’s most prominent scientists on the subject of climate change and the new president of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies." The biogeochemist will lecture on the “role and response of forests in a future warmer world.” He's been at this for over 30 years, so he know of what he speaks!
To take the edge off of the harsh reality, try out the Eco-Cocktail of the Night: the Climate Cooler.
8pm // Union Hall [702 Union St, Park Slope] // Free
