Artist Jeremy Blake's Body Identified

2007_07_arts_blake2.jpgLate last month, after the death of his girlfriend Theresa Duncan, witnesses saw Jeremy Blake walk in to the water around Beach 102nd Street. The 35-year old East Village artist left a suicide note (along with clothes and a wallet) under the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach. His body was found on July 22nd off of Sea Girt, NJ, five days after he was last seen. Yesterday the body was identified as Blake's.

Police spokesman Paul J. Browne says the cause of death was presumed to be suicide. Duncan had also committed suicide just one week before, on July 10th - something Blake referenced in his final letter. While some are calling this a modern day Romeo and Juliet story, others are saying there is more to be unearthed, namely that the couple was adamant in their belief they were being stalked by Scientologists. This may sound "out there" until you read some of Duncan's blog entries documenting their encounters.

Blake asked Glenn O'Brien to write a final post on his girlfriend's blog after her death, which has now been published. Meanwhile, a new work in progress by Blake and Malcolm McLaren called “Glitterbest” was to be shown at an exhibit of his work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington this fall. As of now, the older pieces will still be shown and it's unclear what will happen to the new collaborative piece.

Uh, I don't get why the heck this guy is getting so much press???

Paul Browne is not a chief, but the head PR man for the NYPD. He is a civilian, not a cop, and should not be referred to as Chief anything.

Please correct the article, Gothamist.

More like a modern day "Dumb and Dumber."

sounds like paranoid junkies to me

"Duncan had also committed suicide just one week before,"

i thought if you commit suicide you've succeeded already. Which is why he couldn't have "committed suicide" the week before. Instead, he attempted suicide. Unless he died twice which would totally merit the amount of press about this on gothamist.

oh wait, his girlfriend committed suicide. man i am dumb.

@[1], Blake was well-known in contemporary art circles and was characterized as a rising star. I don't follow contemporary art, but I was really moved by the beautiful stills he created for Punch Drunk Love. Around the same time, his work was shown as part of Creative Time's 59th Minute series, displayed on the Times Square Jumbotron.

Whatever. If you can't stand the heat walk into the water and drown.

Oh, and you do die twice.

I dont have any idea who these people are, but what [4] said sounds right to me.

how much would you care to speculate on this guys art now? should I buy before the price goes up?

yeah. im going with "paranoid junkies" too. sucks.. jeremy blake made some really beautiful stuff.

user-pic

What does that mean, "you die twice"?

punch drunk love, worst movie ever.
and I'm a PT anderson fan. sandler suks, watson suks more. suky movie.
sorry, I'm not as hip as you. la dee da.

Jeremy Blake's artwork was really nice, but definitely best experienced in a gallery or museum installation. The sounds and images would slowly change and had quite a mesmerizing affect. I preferred his earlier work which was mostly bright colors, ill defined shapes, and cool sounds. His work was very different when he added a narrative element. Most of the recent stuff incorporated some sort of narrative. Unfortunately, reading about his personal life is sort of tampering with my fond memories of his work. But, I consider his death a real loss.

After noticing two write ups on Jeremy, I actually took the time to read Duncan's blog and am pretty creeped out. I say it's just as likely something sinister pushed Duncan to kill herself, with Jeremy to follow.

Oh yeah...and not all artists are junkies.

You die once when you actually die, you die a second time when the last person alive who knew you dies.

Wow - that blog..part of my job involves sorting through letters from folks looking for funding from my organization. Some of the stranger ones have a very similar paranoid/conspiracy theory tinge to them. Very sad.

#5 - two different people commmited suicide. read again.

I still don't see what so creepy about her blog, or even so understandable. Seems like a lot of spacey use of quotes and borrowed images with a hint of "the CIA is secret, therefore super evil" stuff, which I have to agree seems like usual drinking and drugging rhetoric.

Sad that such a loving couple went out this way.

Would have to place my bets on drink and drug.

Get's ya sooner or later, every single time.

Her blog (especially the post on Scientologist harassment) was not written like a junkie. She wrote very eloquently and various friends are saying the couple never did drugs. I lived in LA for a year and the Scientologists are TRULY a remarkable cult. Look up the deaths the Scientologists of Florida inflicted on members - it's crazy stuff. But because they're so well-funded, with ties to all kinds of high-status members, it's a lot easier for them to get away with this kind of thing. I've no doubt Blake and Duncan were killed by these people. It's just terrifying to think how nonchalantly these murders was swept under the rug.
