Central Park's West Drive Slightly More Car Free

The Department of Transportation announced that Central Park's West Drive will be car free until 8AM starting on Monday, August 6. Per the DOT's press release, via Streetsblog:

Beginning Monday, August 6th, the West Drive of Central Park between Lenox Avenue and the 7th Avenue Exit will be closed to motor vehicles for an additional hour (7-8am) during the morning peak period. Currently, the West Drive is open to motor vehicles between the hours of 7-10am and operates as an HOV 2+ only roadway. With this change, the West Drive will be open to motor vehicles between the hours of 8-10am only and will continue to operate as an HOV 2+ roadway. This additional hour of closure of the West Drive to motor vehicles provides an additional hour of conflict-free recreational use during the early morning hours.
DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan cites how Central Park is "busy in the mornings with walkers, joggers and cyclists," but there's no mention of the walkers, joggers and cyclists in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, as there were no improvements mentioned for it. Central Park's East Drive is open during the afternoons and early evenings (3-7PM) while East Drive from Sixth Avenue to 72nd and Fifth is open between 7AM and 7PM.

I like Sadik-Khan. She seems to get it, as opposed to her predecessor Iris "I [puffy heart] cars and tourists" Weinstall.

Does this mean that off duty police officers and firemen won't be able to park on the bridle path whenever they choose? I think not.

I feel like cutting work and taking a drive today.

Yes, I think I'll do this. :)

This needs to start happening in Prospect Park, too. It's impossible to run or bike in the morning before work with all of the cars speeding by.

I can't wait until the tackle the next big Central Park problem: all that horse shit.

I'm serious.

People can't let their little rat-dogs drop an ounce of fecal matter, but the horses can drop a ton of shit every day? (it's rare that one means that literally) Give me a break. Last thing I want to be breathing in when exercising in Central Park is that odor.

You people piss and moan about everything.

What's with the white car in the bushes?

Ha-ha!

Yes, I know what you mean. Years ago I had a roommate who had a dog that he barely ever walked beyond the curb. I felt so bad for the pathetic creature that I took it to Central Park one day. It promptly rewarded my kindness by crapping -- right next to a huge pile of horse dung on the bridle path. Being unprepared without any plastic bags or newspaper, and being quite far from a good source of either, I took a look at the relative size of the steaming piles, shrugged my shoulders, figured I'd done a good thing by showing my canine captive the joys of the Park and walked on. Two seconds later an officious fellow ran up to me and berated me for letting "my" dog crap like that without scooping it up. I pointed out the absurdity of the pooches' measly contribution compared to the horse's, but he wasn't having any of it.

Well, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this big city... screw that officious bastard, whoever he was, and let him scoop the road apples of a thousand draft horses for his transgression of common sense!

Sorry about your having to deal with that dick, but at least you got a kickass anecdote out of it.
