Abrams Takes Over Orchard Street

The new J.J. Abrams movie which is still listed as Untitled, but is unofficially being referred to as Cloverfield, was filming on the Lower East Side yesterday and last night. Did anyone catch it? The monster movie is due out January 18th, 2008 - and this past week Abrams spoke of the somewhat mysterious project at Comic-Con.

"I just want to say I want a monster movie. I want a great monster movie. I've wanted a monster movie for so long, and I was in Japan a year ago with my son who is eight, and all he wanted to do was go to toy stores - so I know he's my son. And we went to the store and there were still all of these Godzillas, and I thought we need our own monster. We need a monster movie - not like King Kong. I love King Kong - King Kong is adorable - and Godzilla is a charming monster, but I wanted something that was just insane and intense.

"So we decided to make this movie and we're making it for you now, and it's almost done shooting," Abrams continued. "I watch dailies and I'm more excited about the movie itself than the trailer, which has gotten an amazing response and I can't thank you enough."

The trailer was first seen before the Transformers movie in early July, and due to it's Blair Witch-like quality and the secretiveness surrounding it - fans have been worked into a frenzy! Abrams promised at Comic-Con that over the next six months a "real trailer," poster and more footage would be released, along with the title. For now, there are some websites cracking clues, and the official site is www.1-18-08.com. The main characters also have MySpace pages, here's one (check his "Top 8" for the others).

You can watch the trailer here. Get ready for shaky-cam shots, NY1 Breaking News, screaming 20-somethings and a decapitated Statue of Liberty. The Daily News talks about how there's a resurgence of New York "disaster porn" on film lately, something that slowed down after 9/11. Next up: The Hulk.

It's going to be a live action rampage (yes the old school arcade game) movie.

Awesome! this clears things up a little more.

Note to JJ: They remade Godzilla as an American film with Matthew Broderick. It bombed. So did King Kong. Somehow I doubt you are going to reinvent the genre. Go make Star Trek 11.

The trailer looks great, and the buzz around it is amazing. He's learned alot with Alias and Lost about building suspense...

It's amazing how much geeks will take over the marketing themselves for something they adopt. There's nothing but a vague trailer and these people are going nuts, already declaring it a must-see.

who's the dork tough guy on the left?
Is that what's taken over the LES?

I thought that was a stock photo of Orchard Street from 1977.

"fans have been worked into a frenzy!"

Have they?

the trailer was hipsters vs a monster. Great. Now hipsters are part of a major motion picture. The party the hipsters were at looked like a Gothamist party. Great, now gothamist is in a movie. Orchard street? how much more hipstery can you get? Ugghh. Now more midwesterners will flock to the LES to live their hipster dreams after this movie.

Is it just one guy or multiple douches that keep slamming on the Midwest? Most of the assholes in this city are from Long Island, New Jersey, Fairfield County, or homebred.

I disagree, we've known about those assholes for years and some of them do change.
It's these new transplant assholes who come here thinking they're hot shit. acting all assholey from the get go.

Waaah, waaah, hipsters suck, hipsters are douchebags! Yes, they do and are...but quit fucking whining and get on with your life.

the word "hipster" has now officially jumped the shark on gothamist boards.

and honestly, i believe the people in the trailer should be scientifically classified as yuppies, not hipsters. as much as "hipster" has become shorthand for "whomever i'm contemptuous towards at the moment," i think there's a clear difference between yuppies and hipsters.

YES MAM I SAW! I walked past and immediately thought Abrams.

That is all

Jen, you should really identify people rather than just dropping their names. As I was reading I kept asking, "who the Hell is JJ Abrams". IMDB informed me that he's a television producer. Am I just out of it, or should I have known who this guy is?

The trailer looks interesting.

I'd agree with #13 those are yuppies, not hipsters.

the phrase "jumped the shark" has now officially jumped the shark.

this reminds me of 9/11. Too SOOn!!!!!

liulide: Bravo! You hit the nail on the head exactly. Hipster has basically lost any meaning.

NYC has always had some group of people for whom the driving force of their existence is appearing cool. At some point they were beatniks, then hippies, then disco people, then breakdancers, skaters and so on and so on. At some point people do become pale imitations of others, but you have to admit that one of the reason NYC is such a great place is that people are constantly inventing fantastic new things in the realms of art, music, writing and partying.

@[13]liulide - Hipsters are just yuppies in torn t-shirts. They're all materialistic, superficial and status obsessed.
