Steam Pipe Victim "Couldn't Stop Screaming"

2007_07_suarstewmc.JPGThe family of Gregory McCullough, the tow truck driver who suffered third-degree burns over 80% of his body from the Midtown steam pipe explosion, had an emotional meeting with the man who helped him. Junior Suarez, a 27-year-old who works at an employment agency, broke down as he described McCullough's pain,"He was just screaming and screaming and couldn't stop screaming."

McCullough's mother Tanya McCullough-Stewart said, "We were just thankful that someone was there to hold him, and that he wasn’t suffering by himself," and added it was "devastating" that her 23-year-old son was so injured. The family announced it would be suing Con Ed and perhaps the city for negligence. One of the lawyers retained by the McCullough family is Kenneth Thompson, a former prosecutor who worked on the Abner Louima case; he said, "There is a history of problems at that intersection."

You can see video from the press conference here; Suarez comforts McCullough's mother at one point, and then when Suarez is crying, McCullough's stepfather tries to comfort him. And apparently McCullough, though in pain, had helped his passenger, Judith Bailey, out of the truck. Bailey has burns over 30% of her body; she, like McCullough, is at New York Hospital's burn unit.

I can't stop crying when hearing or reading about this story. All the best to Mr. McCullough and his family, to Ms. Bailey, and to Mr. Suarez. A big thank you to Mr. Suarez for helping him the way you did. I only hope to have your compassion if ever I find myself in such a moment.

Yes, it's incredibly moving any way you look at it and I think one of the papers was right to call Suarez a hero, because he managed to give McCullough a tiny bit of comfort during his pain. I am hoping for the best for McCullough and also hope his family realizes the whole city is pulling for all of them.

It just wouldn't be a Jen Chung story without some kind of syntax or grammatical error.....

I wouldn't be too surprised if Suarez sued Con Ed for emotional distress. The NY Times article that described him helping McCullough on the day of the blast sounded really horrific.

And it just wouldn't be a Jen Chnung story without some moron with nothing better to do picking it apart. If you don't like it, go read the Post. The rest of us are sick of having to read your clutter.

It was gut wrenching to watch mr. suarez break down.
you can see his eyes well up when recounting his story. he took it pretty hard.

You should probably see a shrink because it isn't healthy to get this emotionally distressed over the news. I don't see how you could read the papers for the last 100 years if this was your typical response.

#8- It's called empathy. You should try it someday.

ugh, i just *read* about this story and it makes me feel ill thinking about this poor young man. and when people say they hope he pulls through, that kind of makes me feel even worse. maybe my glass is half empty, but i'm not sure what to hope for. what a mess.

It's utterly hilarious to read the grammar nazi remarks. I bet they run their statements through Word to see if they themselves are as "guilty" as Jen.

WHO FCKING CARES??? Oh wait that's right, unemplyed grammar nazi's, $200,000 in dept from Columbia, weighing the hard working middle class down——GET A JOB in Q.C. and shut the EF up!

Ah, poor guest #8, heartless and emotionless. Must be a drag.

I remember seeing the tv video from the explosion, and seeing that red truck in the middle of the hole with steam gushing out. I just thought to myself, "God help them if there is actually a person in the middle of that blast furnace".

Freakin terrible, and I hope he gets some compensation out of the city.

#14 "I hope he gets some compensation out of the city." Don't you mean ConEd?

It's not like correcting spelling errors of other message board posters. She's a professional editor for a web site of some repute, and she does it all the time. It's fair game.

And she fixed it. She needs someone to help her out. Is she an ESL student?

Then why don't you send her a tip or an email instead of consistently acting like an a**hole? Maybe offer to be the proofreader or copyeditor? Maybe they might even pay you since your daytime mailroom job isn't working out for you. Every freaking post. Get a life, a job or a girlfriend. Get something, please. Get a real name besides guest, a real email address; get your own blog even. You're worst than the typos ever are.

#12 and #17 - WORD.
Suggestion to grammar nazis: go volunteer to help the City Council's doubleplusgood speech campaign.

Piping Hot Steam= White
Scalded Victim=Partially Still Black

What a vicious and racist pipe.

I'll see you in Hell.

*I* need to get a life? That's funny. You're the one getting bent out of shape because someone pointed out an error in a Gothamist entry, and yet *I* need to get a life.
