Mets And Yankees Look To Add Before Trade Deadline

2007_07_scastillo.jpgThe Yankees and Mets head into today’s trade deadline with similar objectives, upgrading their bullpens, but the Mets have already strengthened their team.

Yesterday, the Mets acquired Luis Castillo from the Minnesota Twins for AA catcher Drew Butera and Class A outfielder Dustin Martin. Martin had a .779 OPS for St. Lucie while Butera, considered more of a defensive player, had struggled in AA hitting only .188. In Castillo, a three-time All Star and former Florida Marlin, the Mets get the prototypical small-ball player and fill the void left by Jose Valentin who is out with a broken leg. He is excellent defensively at second and can slap singles, draw walks, lay down bunts and steal bases. He should be a great fit in the lineup behind Jose Reyes.

That doesn’t mean the Mets should be done trading. Atlanta has really upgraded with Mark Teixeira and may have more help on the way. Getting another setup guy for the bullpen seems like a must and while Pedro should be back (he's preparing for a class A start), it would make sense to add another veteran starter.

The Yankees have to rework their bullpen, even their closer agrees. One move they could apparently make would be to trade Scott Proctor for Wilson Betemit (scroll to end). Presumably, they would then promote Joba Chamberlain from AAA to fill Proctor’s spot. Getting rid of Kyle Farnsworth before he injuries Jorge Posada is a necessity, even if they have to give him away.

Teams have until 4pm to complete trades before the deadline. We'll update this post if any moves are made.

UPDATE 1pm- The Yankees have pulled off the Betemit for Proctor trade. This trade will strengthen the Yankees' bench and may give the Yankees a fallback plan if A-Rod leaves, but it subtracts instead of adds from the bullpen. This can't be it for them. Three hours to go until the deadline.

If the Yankees can not increase their payroll to $300 million plus by the trading deadline I will be very disappointed.

Yeah..

If $200 million only gets you second place in the American League East, and third place in the wild card, maybe another $100 million will do the trick

Yankees Suck..!

It's kind of amazing that the Yankees have made up so much ground, but then it was kind of amazing (and highly gratifying - Yankees suck!) to watch their miserable start.

I sincerely hope they miss the playoffs entirely, but I'm not holding my breath. There's way too much talent on that team to count them out this early.

cwbuecheler you're much, much too kind..

And, here come the New Jack Met fans (I've only been watching baseball for a year, but I'm REALLY into it!).

Keep playing the small market card, douches. Go Royals!

Yes GO ROYALS! Unfortunately, they aren't going anywhere until baseball gets a salary cap. Until then the Royals will be the Yankees major league farm team. Oh, and don't give me that "At least George Steinbrenner pays his players instead of keeping the money" Bulldink. The Yankees keep raising ticket prices, cable prices, merchanidising prices, etc. They ARE the evil empire. They spend 100 million more than the next team. They have ruined baseball.

It's kind of amazing that the Yankees have made up so much ground, b

They won a lot of games against the 2 worst teams in their league. I find it fascinating that the team is so bad this season that people are taking solace in 6/8 against the Royals and Devil Rays.

Baseball needs some kind of slary cap. It also needs to insitute a minimum, and i f david Glass is not willing to meet this, he loses his team. If marge Schott can lose her stake in the team for making racist comments, then certainly Glass can lose his for fleecing the people of Kansas City for years.

I, for one, am glad i live in NY where the owners of both teams know they have to spend money and put a competitive product on the field.

which is the worse of these crimes? Steinbrenner, wilpon, Moreno, henry/Lucchino exploiting loopholes in a demonstrably unfair system for the benefit of themselves, their business and their fans, or Selig testifiying before Congress that baseball cannot survive in S. Florida due to an unfair broadcasting contract? He points to Huizenga being forced to sign a $1M/30 yr. contract with the sunshine network that he can't get out of? Of course, he neglects to mention that Hizenga OWNS the sunshine network and is merely fleecing ppl. on both ends b/c you can cry poverty and look for revenue sharing in TV. Selig claimed that 24 of the 9at the time) 28 teams were losing money. then, 19. then, 16. then, 14. All the way down to 6, as his lies kept coming to the fore. This is called perjury and he should have been indicted immediately.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for used car salesmen who get rich running other people out of business, steal the Seattle Piulots, then look for revenue sharing when he can't get his stadium built.

Be thankful you live in NY where you can argue about the pennant race. KC hasn't had that luxury since 1985.

"Be thankful you live in NY where you can argue about the pennant race. KC hasn't had that luxury since 1985."

And whose fault is that? I wouldn't blame the city or the owner. He can't charge $4.75 for a hot dog. Sure there have been some shady folks involved in baseball, but really, it comes down to parity and if one looks to basketball/football/hockey, sports with salary caps, there is parity.

I'm with you on salary cap and minimum. I'm for this is every job, not just baseball. Heck, there is a minimum wage, why not a maximum wage?

But that's another issue.

The highest payrolll in the NHL is the Rangers.

The highest payroll (by 37 Million) in basketabll is The Knicks.

The NFL's cap is absurd and pointless.

it's not just about spending money, it's about spending money wisely, which the Rangers and Knicks don't do and the Yankees haven't done in years.
