Representatives Anthony Weiner and Jerrold Nadler announced that they are introducing legislation to block a $20 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia. The Sun reports the pair stood in front of the Saudi Consulate, questioning the logic of the Bush administration's plan. Nadler said, "The folly of this arms deal is beyond belief. Saudi Arabia is the no. 1 exporter of terrorism in the world today."
Supporters of the deal, which includes advanced weaponry, "say it will strengthen the country's military in the face of a growing Iranian threat," according to the AP. Weiner pointed out that 15 of the 19 hijackers on September 11 were Saudi citizens, and added, "We are going to be fighting very hard to make sure Congress rejects this idea and that these sophisticated armaments don't go to the part of the world where we only have one friend, and frankly, that's Israel."
However, a Georgetown professor of Arab politics, Samer Shehata, told the Sun chances of the bill being blocked were slim: "It's $20 billion. The arms industry is a major industry. Lots of people make money from this." And Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he understands the deal but expects more aid from the U.S. because an "explicit promise was given that Israel's qualitative military edge over the Arab states will be ensured."

What about the article where Chuck Schumer is trying to block any changes in the tax code that would raise taxes on hedge fund managers?

Gothamist is mad as hell and isn't gonna take it anymore. Unfortunately, just as Howard Beale surrendered to the corporate machine, Gothamist too has realized above all it's about wealth before country.
If the US didn't sell them the arms they would probably have bought them somewhere. The Saudis are sitting on billions of our oil dollars. And everyone has been worrying that Iran's quest for a nuclear bomb would drive the Saudis to want one too (and Egypt for those scoring at home). So I don't see how this sale really changes anything. It was a powder keg yesterday and it will be tomorrow.
I just get upset that after selling weapons to all sides over there, we then spend BILLIONS OF TAXPAER DOLLARS trying to get these customers to not use those weapons on eachother.
Of course George Bush will sell arms to terrorists. It makes sense. he gets away with everything.
read Sleeping with the Devil by Robert Baer. Explains the Saudi arms/oil pact with the United States. 15 of 19 ... never forget that.
"Israel is a friend?" More like Israel is WAY too involved in US foreign policy for it's own good. When the US wakes up and turns off entertainment television, only then can one hope for an accurate educated-assessment on the Middle East.
The U.S. Government is about to do something incredibly stupid ! Why would any of Our elected officials contemplate, Let alone try aiding the very people that were partly responsible for the [9]-[11] attacks ? This has to be the dumbest idea yet to come from the Bush administration . It's bad enough these nutcases are still trying to bomb us and now our own Government wants to help them accomplish it ! Israel is not our friend, They are opportunistic pricks seizing the advantages we present them with . Remember the four day war they fought against the Arabs ? The U.S. Supported them with the weapons they used to win ! You see now what that has lead to, It's yet another mistake by our Government and we might end up pay the price again for our meddling ! On a side note, It seems to me the Nice Folk at the Gothamist have a problem making money . So much so that they really want to lose a chunk of it . I read the "Guest" profile a while back and didn't find it amusing . I'm pretty sure Ur legal team will tell you that Defaming a person's likeness in anyway could be grounds for legal proceeding . i won't get into the body of this issue, but Gothamist you have been placed on notice of Ur Companies Folly !
