Sometimes you get the luck of the draw. The rain we were expecting this weekend mostly stayed north of the city. Sticky weather will be here for the rest of the day and there will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy downpours, this afternoon and evening. A high pressure system will be pushing the humidity out this evening, so tomorrow will be sunny. Both today and tomorrow will see highs in the 85-87 degree range.
The remainder of the week will be warmer. Maximum temperatures from Wednesday through Saturday look like they will flirt with 90 degrees. Clear skies will be the rule until Friday, when high humidity and clouds should return.
July has been running a couple degrees below normal in New York (that's not the case globally). There's only been two 90 degree days. That got Gothamist to wondering about the trends in extremely warm days. We plotted number of days in which the temperature reached 90 degrees by month since 1971 on the graph above.
There's not much trend to speak of, mainly because the number of extremely hot days varies greatly from summer to summer. In 1991 there were 39 days in which the mercury climbed to 90 degrees. In 2004 there were only two. July 1993 alone had a whopping 19 days of at least 90 degrees. August averages slightly more than five 90 degree days. Maybe it will start out with a couple this year.

So are we supposed to want more 90 degree days, or less? Personally I'd be perfectly happy to spend a year never seeing a single day go above 90. But I get the impression some people like the heat.
I'm hoping this is a mild summer compared to the last couple of years. I like getting out in the sun, but when you get over 85 with any kind of humidity, the enjoyment just goes right out of summer for me.
pfft. global warming.
i'd personally like to see more summers like 2004, less heat, less snark.
Um, did you miss yesterday? Because it rained all day.

That's the worst friggin' bar chart ever. The colors are barely distinguishable. Was that designed by Homeland Security?
I don't get the link that was provided - doesn't tell anything very conclusive about global temperature trends.
It poured yesterday. :erm:
Agreed -- that chart is useless. If you'd used normal, solid colors instead of weird gradients, we might have had a shot at reading it.
You little bitches. We want solid colors, not gradients!!! WAAAHHH!!! shut the fuck up and go read another blog if you don't like this one.
RatherBe wins this thread!
no, no he doesnt.
