Fatal Hit-and-Run Man Dies After Apparent Fall in Greenwich Village

2007_07_610.JPGOn Gothamist Contribute, someone wrote about an incident that occurred at 6th Avenue and 10th Street in Manhattan:

I went running at 5:15 and there were cops and detectives all over the corner by Ansonia pharmacy. The whole area was taped off. I asked a bodega owner and he said a guy jumped from a building. When the pharmacy opened I went in and asked and she said she thought it was a hit and run. She said detectives came in this morning and asked if they had cameras outside of the bldg. and told her a body was found outside.

Have you heard anything about this? It's a quiet area for something to happen and not hear about it.

It turns out it may have been a hit-and-run - and a man was killed. Now WNBC is reporting that police believe former NBC News producer Eric Wishnie may have fallen to his death. He was found lying in the street at 2:51AM, and now it seems that his injuries are consistent with those of a fall victim. The police had been looking for a driver, who may have hit him, but there were no witnesses, vehicle parts, or visible skid marks, but they have now called off the investigation.

Wishnie was the husband of NBC News correspondent Dawn Fratangelo, who many will remember as being a WNBC anchor during the 6PM broadcast in the early 1990s.

Dumbass? Reality Czech-making irresponsible and insensitive comments like that without any facts show you to be the dumbass. Just remember Kharma is a bitch. I expect your day of kharmic pay back is coming. Hope I am around to post what a dumbass you are when it happens.

yep, now NBC mentions he's an ex-employee. from the way the stories were written I thought the was still in their employ. He was let go in November.

NBC got blood on their hands.

    Estranged husband of NBC correspondent

Lost job last fall, but sees the job every day by being married to aformentioned NBC correspondent.

    This is pointing towards suicide.

Who the hell else falls 50+ feet at 2am?

The first real victim of NBC 2.0 cost-cutting.

A fine producer, but he probably had a hard time trying to get work at his level ...

  • Reality Czech

well, he did fall, but whatever. Dumbass.

  • so $50 for a jaywalking fine which is a mild fine compared to some cities which can be over $100.00... giuliani, while some of his new laws do suck, in this case it's not too bad...

$50 for jaywalking and if you're listening to your ipod, $100.00.

    Rocknrope,

It is probably better to avoid this construction for the reason you identify and instead say:

"Wishnie is survived by his wife, NBC News correspondent Dawn Fratangelo, who many will remember as being a WNBC anchor during the 6PM broadcast in the early 1990s."

Millions of obituaries can't be wrong.

  • citychik

Yes, Rocknrope, the wording was vague.

Wishnie was married to NBC News correspondent Dawn Fratangelo... could have been changed to:

Wishnie is survived by his spouse, NBC News correspondent Dawn Fratangelo... [if still married at time of death] [if separated, then follow with "from whom he was separated"]

    or

The divorced Wisnie had been married to... [if divorced at time of death]

just a few other options that would have helped to clarify!

  • Rocknrope

Ok, a real grammar question for all you Gestapo: Is the correct usage "Wishnie was married" because he is now dead, or should it be "Wishnie is married" because he was still married to her at the time of his death? When I first read it, I thought that perhaps he was divorced because of the past tense usage.

Is everyone here just assuming he jaywalked? WNBC says he fell from the roof of his building. Was he jaywaliking on the roof?

  • guest

Not so anymore edEx, per Giuliani it's a $50 ticket.

  • Jay-walking is a crime in NYC is punishable by a $2.00 fine.

  • guest

I wonder if the toxicology reports will show drugs and/or alcohol in his system.

If the police officers are looking for skid marks, they should check this gentleman's underwear.

  • Tim N.

WNBC now saying he either jumped or fell (well, I guess if he jumped he fell, but its either with or without intent).

  • guest

He jumped and no one heard a thing? there's a bodega at tenth and sixth?

  • Reality Czech

they should start ticketing jaywalkers so as a tragedy like this could be avoided in the future.

  • fix this, before the grammar nazi's come: *...and a man was died.*
