Times Weddings Highlights: Planning for 08/08/08

2007_07_pinkbouq.jpgAha! We were right when we suggested that August 8, 2008 might be another coveted wedding date to consider, now that July 7, 2007 has passed. The date 08/08/08 is considered very auspicious by Asian cultures (in fact, the 2008 Olympics in Beijing will start on that day), and some weddings planners who specialized in Chinese weddings are seeing a big rush. One told LJWorld, "We like to do three weddings max a day, but we might end up doing four to five because of this hot date."

Another benefit to August 8, 2008 is that it falls on a Friday, which is usually less expensive than Saturdays when booking reception spaces. We're not sure the numerological benefits of September 9, 2009, but anyone interested in super long engagements, we're calling this now: Sunday wedding on October 10, 2010.

And here are highlights from this week's NY Times Weddings & Celebrations:

  • There are 37 announcements, plus the Vows column
  • There are 20 photographs of couples and 1 photograph of the bride-only
  • The youngest bride is 25, the oldest bride is 47 (the Vow column bride is 64)
  • The youngest groom is 25, the oldest groom is 68
  • One bride is a reporter for News 12 the Bronx; her groom is the sports anchor for WCBS 2
  • One bride's father is a Broadway producer (Spamalot, Legally Blonde, History Boys), vice chairman of Lincoln Center, and vice chairman of an investment bank
  • One bridegroom wrote the book, The Reluctant Metrosexual
  • One bride's grandfather was former vice-president Hubert Humphrey Jr
  • One bridegroom is an associate at Skadden Arps, where his father-in-law is a senior partner, but he happened to meet his bride on JDate
  • And one couple met while they were teaching at PS 83 in Manhattan, although the bride wasn't sure if all the hanging out together they were doing meant they dating, so she asked.

do you think the Skadden Arps guy had the job before or after he met the girl?? He didn't go to Harvard.

I told my brother, who has two 20ty something daughers, to hold back on the big wedding expenses - considering divorce stats...
A good friend of mine recently threw a modest but very cool wedding blast at her favorite bar with a simple (but delicious) buffet, open bar, hula dancers, and a great bar band. Everybody got smashed and had a fabulous time. Of course, if you are marrying fortunes, lots of real property and plan on breeding maybe the over the top most stylish expensive wedding is the way to go... have a good time, and congratulations - but get a pre-nup.

That's my wife in the picture!

09/09/09 will indeed be another auspicious date. In Chinese, "9" and "forever" sound similar - so it'd be, "forever, forever, and forever." (Yikes!!!)
