On Friday, Pepsi-Cola announced that its Aquafina brand bottled water would carry labels clearly stating that its water is tap water. If you think "The Aquafina in this bottle is purified water that originates from a public water source" or something along those lines is considered clear. Sure, Aquafina says its water is filtered, but this is a win for environmental groups (think the waste from bottle, the trucking to distribute the product, etc.) and people who want truth in advertising - as well as for NYC.
Last month, the city embarked on an advertising campaign to tout the benefits of NYC tap water, to encourage people to save money and reduce waste. In fact, a 2005 20/20 segment found that there's really no difference between bottled water and NYC tap water, and the city's tap water has long been heralded as one of the nation's best. However, in 2004, there were concerns that some water quality results were manipulated and in May, some trace amounts of a chemical known as perc (used in auto body shops and dry cleaners) were found in a Queens drinking water supply.
You can see the NYC DEP's water quality report here. Also, you can check out this NRDC study on whether bottled water is pure drink or pure hype - and have you read how Fiji Water gets over here? It's nuts!

Anyone who drinks Fiji water is a tool.
until tap stops tasting like tap, i'm going to stick my poland spring. thanks.
until tap stops tasting like tap, i am going to stick with my poland spring. thanks.
New York's water is indeed some of the best, as much of it comes from the Catskills upstate.
However, perhaps more importantly, this awesome water often travels through some not-so-awesome plumbing in older buildings.
So I always filter my water anyway.
he didn't stutter
I always carry a Camelbak bottle instead of buying bottled water and use a Brita pitcher at home. The only problem is there are precious few places to refill the bottle while I'm on the go. Most fast food places give you the evil eye if you ask to have it filled. Water fountains in city parks are too rare.

Sometimes Gothamist really just blows my mind.
I agree Paul. That is mental retardation encapsulated into one sentence.
Water fountains in city parks are too rare.
I saw a guy letting his dog drink directly from a water fountain in Central Park, behind the Met.
I think some of these companies are being wrongly accused or vilified. Purifying water through reverse osmosis is a legitimate and real reason to choose their bottled water over tap water and over other types of non-purified water (Fuji, Evian...). Most people who know and want water that has been purified through this process know where the water is coming from (the tap and probably have their own purifying systems at home)! Its actually purer and better than whatever they claim comes through the "Alps, rivers & streams of blah blah blah!"
All a personal opinion of someone who grew up with reverse osmosis system but now drinks good ol' NY tap water and uses her nalgene at work (purifying shit is expensive!).

I'd be all about drinking tap water if my tap water did not taste so icky... even on days when it does not appear yellowish. Maybe the city should embark on a campaign to replace gross old pipes in tenement buildings.
The taste some people don't like in tap water is chlorine. Put the water in the frig overnight, and the chlorine comes out and the water gets cold. Drink it and refill.
Poland spring should just sell the empty bottles. The bottles is all we need.
I don't know about everyone else's water and pipes, but it's not chlorine I'm tasting.

In reference to the pic, "Delicious" seems like a bit of a stretch, no?
New York City tap water tastes way better than tap water in other states. There is a definite difference between New York water and New Jersey tap water.
One of my best friends lives in NYC and always says how great the tap water is. She comes to visit me and will not drink mine. I haven't been there in a while but next time I go I will make sure to try it out! As for Aquafina, the label reads pure water meaning that it's not natural spring water but purified water. It just takes looking at the label. But I do think it's good that they are changing the label to make it more clear for consumers.
GROWING CONCERNS OF CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER
Hello, my name is Carl Cooper and I am owner and founder of Silco & Co and Silco products. I have came up with a formula using colloidal minerals to purify water from any water source from lakes, ponds, rivers etc. Many people think that these water purification kits can not take the heavy metals out of the water, but thats where their wrong. My water purification kit can kill all the bacteria and pathogens the water may contain and also making the heavy metals along with all other bacteria and contaminents sink to the bottom creating what you would call the "flocculation" process. If you would like to no more you can e-mail me or visit my web site at www.silconano.com thank you!.
