Sartorial Squall Over Senator Clinton

2007_07_hilclincorl.jpg

Senator Hillary Clinton has never been on the cutting edge of fashion. Nor was she ever meant to be (okay, she was on the cover of Vogue in 1998) and she's poked fun at her fashion choices (have pantsuit, can rule the world) before. But this past week, everyone's got an opinion about her style.

During the Democrats' YouTube debate, when asked what he didn't like about the junior Senator from New York, Senator John Edwards said he wasn't "sure about that coat" referring to a coral jacket that stood out in a sea of staid grays, blacks and blues the male Democratic presidential hopefuls were in. What, he didn't want to let his wife to chime in?

2007_07_clintoncleav.jpgAnd then there's the hubbub over Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan's analysis of Clinton's slightly low-cut shirt (under a suit jacket), worn while at the Senate: "It was startling to see that small acknowledgment of sexuality and femininity peeking out of the conservative -- aesthetically speaking -- environment of Congress."

Clinton's aide Ann Lewis sent a letter fuming about the "grossly inappropriate" story, "Frankly, focusing on women's bodies instead of their ideas is insulting. It's insulting to every woman who has ever tried to be taken seriously in a business meeting." Seriously, who wants to think about Clinton's cleavage anyway? Let's focus on Fred Thompson's smoking trophy wife! Or John Edwards' $400 haircuts. Or how Rudy Giuliani no longer has a combover.

Ms. sent an email asking feminist activists to voice their dismay with the Post, though The Corner wonders if Ms. did the same when Givhan found Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice looked like a dominatrix in one outfit.

Hmmmm...I think coral is more her color than pink.
If anything, people ought to be criticizing the men and thier boring dark suits (it IS summer, what wrong with some lighter colors?)and same ol' same ol' ties. And, really guys, shirts come in colors! Why wear white all the time, when there's blues, and yellows and shirts with stripes! Get with it-someone get these guys some copies of GQ and Esquire and Men's Vogue!

I can't believe how hot Fred Thompson's wife is. Who did he kill to land her? How much money does he have?

Yeah, the guys definitely look like men of the cloth from CEO corporate command centers. Echh. It reflects who their real constituents are. My makeover vote tends toward a Village People array of costumes, or possibly Star Trek. Anyway, wouldn't W look great in a leather teddy, black silk undies, and garter belt? (He'd have to practice some new facial expressions, though, for my money)

Seriously? This is the best story about Hillary? You guys are worse than the Times which today has an article about Hillary's college years corresponance with a male friend. The Times has been running these fluff pieces to make their pick seem more appealing.

OK, so she's a woman so her clothes are newsworthy... I'm glad you've got your priorities right!
