Manhattan's Bide-A-Wee animal shelter is having a grand opening today and tomorrow for its new "Kitty Cat Habitat." The space is now cageless, allowing cats to "roam free, romp on ledges and bridges and enjoy looking out windows while waiting for permanent homes or foster homes" and to be happy as they await their new humans. Aw!
There will also be a Bideawee trainer available to answer questions about cats, information about grooming, refreshments, and children's face painting. And if you can't make it or can't adopt/foster a kitten or cat now, you could donate some items - Bideawee needs not only new or gently used towels, blankets, pillow cases, etc., but even newspapers.
Bideawee, which is a no-kill shelter, is located 410 East 38th Street (212.532.4455), and the event is today, Saturday, and tomorrow between 10AM and 6PM. And we must disclose something: Our super-terrific cat was adopted in 1990 (!!) from the Bide-A-Wee - he was a tree rescue.

My girlfriend and I just adopted an adult cat from the ASPCA shelter on 92nd st. Bide-A-Wee was another one we looked at, but in the end we are lazy and picked the one close to us. :)
It's nice that the city has so many no-kill shelters and that ones like Bide-A-Wee are able to invest enough to give the animals a really comfortable place to wait for adoption.
This post has no real point. Just rambling. Now I will link my cat! http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1186/923649309_2ccff1b3dd_m.jpg
that's awesome your kitty is 17 yrs old, jen
we adopted our kitty at the northshore animal league. bid a wee has a pretty strict adoption policy, but they all do.
Aw, cwbuechler, what a sweet cat. Yes, it's really great there are so many no-kill pet shelters. But it takes a lot of money and energy to run them and educate people about spaying and neutering their pets!
And #2, thanks - our cat is actually 19 (!!! - my husband adopted him when he was 2).
Shelter kitties rule!
