Camera in the Kitchen: The Chocolate Room

The Chocolate RoomWhen we're in the mood for chocolate indulgence, we like to head over to The Chocolate Room in Park Slope.

Each dessert meal begins with an amuse of Valrhona sorbet. It finally convinced us of what Alice Medrich has been saying all along, that chocolate desserts are much more intense without dairy around to muddy the flavor.

As you can see, we couldn't even resist the sorbet long enough to take a picture first.

We have begged and pleaded for the recipe, and tried to recreate it at home with only partial success, but again and again they tell us that the recipe is a secret until they finally get around to writing a cookbook.

The other desserts are worthwhile, too. We're addicted to the brownie sundae with homemade Sumatran coffee ice cream, with whipped cream, cocoa nibs, and a cherry on top. We were less impressed by the black bottom butterscotch custard, but that may just be due to our intermittent dislike of coconut.

The wine list is a joy to dessert wine lovers like ourselves. The chocolate port is seriously chocolatey without being cloying, and we've rarely come across the ice wine that we didn't like. Each dessert has a suggested booze pairing, and they haven't led us wrong yet.

The specials are come and go. We are not overawed by a special of chocolate cake, but we were thrilled by the recent special of homemade banana rum ice cream sandwiches.

It's a great neighborhood joint, cozy without being obnoxiously small, and a wonderful place to woo your favorite chocoholic by candlelight.

I have to say - The Chocolate Room is just another reason I dislike Park Slope. Everything in there is totally overpriced. It's Brooklyn for chrissakes.

That spoon looks like it was dipped in doody.

i'm with kim; the place is highly overpriced. still, the mint ice cream and the hot chocolate are both good.

Chocolate Room is temptingly delicious despite the Manhattan priced range.

If there's one thing I've learned on Gothamist over the past week, it's that no matter what a picture of food looks like, somebody will complain about it.

Cocoa Bar on 7th ave btwn. 6th and 7th sts in the Slope is really good as well.

Overpriced? Are you kidding? There are plenty of Manhattan places that don't make their own iceream, cakes, brownies... and charge just as much or more!

If your idea of chocolate heaven is a Hershey bar, the I suppose the Chocolate Room isn't for you: all the more room for me & my friends who go there because the quality of everything (including the friendly service) is first rate.

Cocoa Bar is nothing but a copy of Chocolate Room. I'll stick with the original, not the knock-off.

Kim.m- The "It's Brooklyn for chrissakes" argument is kinda irrelevant at this point. Manhattan ain't the only borough with people willing to pay high prices for chocolate.

Danielle,

I can't believe how obnoxious people are. I liked your posts about the walnut chicken (plus the handmade glass plate was really nice) and the jambalaya. I thought the pictures were nicely shot and the stories were interesting.

To people like #3 - didn't your mother ever tell you how rude it is to make negative comments about someone else's food?

Regards.

#9 - Manhattan most certainly isn't the only borough willing to pay high prices, you are correct. But Brooklyn isn't meant to be the land of high priced truffles. The fact that it is, only makes the demise of this borough only that much more evident.

#8 - Overpriced, definitely. I went in one night looking for a hostess gift and wanted to spend no more than $25. That was basically impossible. I think I bought the chocolate covered cocoa beans, which if I hadn't have been in such a pinch, I could have gotten them from Trader Joe's at a much, much better value.

Reading these blogs I have come to the conclusion that people use them to merely to complain and moan about every and anything. What a view of american society!
