Check Cashing Twist in Bronx Murder-Suicide

2007_07_fontanez.jpgThere's a new dimension to the murder-suicide of a Bronx cop and his girlfriend. Fred Maselli, who police say shot himself after killing his girlfriend Shirley Fontanez, may have been involved in a check-cashing scam with Fontanez.

The Post reports that 40-year-old Maselli may have supplied Fontanez with fake stolen checks. Fontanez, who was either 18 or 19, would cash them at her work - a check-cashing establishment in Paterson, NJ. Rivera Check Cashing fired Fontanez after she stole at least $40,000.

Monica Pineda, a friend of Fontanez's, told the Daily News that Fontanez was going to return half the money as part of a plea deal. Pineda said Maselli had purchased cars with the money and that Fontanez was trying to get back her share: "The reason he killed her is because she was going to tell on him." Fontanez's mother also said that her daughter was trying to break up with Maselli, but Maselli would threaten her daughter, text-messaging to her, "I'm going to kill you." And Rivera Check Cashing's manager Angel Orta, who said he was friends with Fontanez, told the Post, "He was jealous, but we thought we could trust him. He was a cop."

The News adds that Maselli's neighbors had called 911 about gunshots on Sunday morning, but the responding officers didn't find anything. Maselli and Fontanez were found in his apartment on Monday.

"but when the police who respond didn't find anything."

EH?

That picture is something else. Almost as if she's saying, "Eh, I'm dead, whatcanyado?"

I know I said I wouldn't complain anymore, but can't you guys read over your material at least once before posting? Please? Pretty please?

Hooray for the Keystone Kops, I mean NYPD. Keeping us safe and crime free.

Wait! Are they saying that the cop was involved in criminal activity? That's not surprising, that's expected! Of course, it takes a murder suicide to bring it to light.

"We thought we could trust him....he was a cop."

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

How's that for the most ignorant line of the day.

What is a 40-year-old man doing with an "18 or 19" year-old girl anyway?!? That, in and of itself, suggests that Maselli had deep-seated psychological issues. (Typically, those relationships never last anyway, once the girl gets older and gets a clue.)

Where were the ranking officers throughout all of this? Why didn't anyone say anything when he would parade the girl through the halls? Why didn't anyone in Evidence notice $70,000 worth of stolen checks missing? Makes you wonder what else goes on at the 34th Precinct house.

meh, see the pictures?
not really cute enough to be 'paraded down the halls...'

The 34th is corrupt from top to bottom. And how come there's been no picture of the cop released?

I absolutely LOATHE "at her work" as well. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

#10, of course there's pictures of the cop Officer Maselli out there. I saw his picture on the news yesterday.

#11, The Post states Freder Maselli, 40, who was assigned to the 34th Precinct, allegedly supplied stolen checks to his girlfriend, Shirley Fontanez, 19, who cashed them at Rivera Check Cashing in Paterson, N.J., where she worked, according to a person familiar with the scam.

Jen twists this into The Post reports that 40-year-old Maselli may have supplied Fontanez with fake checks. Fontanez, who was either 18 or 19, would cash them at her work - a check-cashing establishment in Paterson, NJ. Rivera Check Cashing fired Fontanez after she stole at least $40,000.

How does stolen checks turn into fake checks? Jen, you're obviously not a reporter. Can you just copy and paste the quotes directly, and stop twisting the stories to generate controversial comments?

That's the true definition of a TROLL

Does anyone know where to get a picture of Maselli? I would like to use it on my blog.

Point taken, #11 - I do read a number of stories at the same time, and mistakes are made. Thanks for pointing out this error, it's fixed.

Yes. SOME of the cops at that pricinct are corrupt. But there may be a decent cop there.

What obviously some people posting here are failing to understand is the bigger picture here to their questions, and that is this -

Why does someone 40 years old get away with having a relatonship with a girl since she was underage ?

The answer is in the opposite question, which is

Why DOSEN'T someone 40 years old get away with a relationship with an underage girl ? BECAUSE HE REFUSES TO PAY UP !!!!

That is what goes on in places like Washington Heights - as long as the guy is paying - then the girl doesn't neccessarily "know who the father is"....................but the minute he stops paying - she suddenly remembers that an older man got her pregnant when she was underage, and this becomes public knowledge that typically, and suddenly makes headline news.

As long as the guy is paying.........

See, in many cultures, that is the way it is, and it is customary to be with an older man;

In some cultures, as in the USA, it is not only taboo, but there are laws regarding such relationships.

So some people come to this country and play both sides of the coin. And some people from this country play right along. And with NO SURPRISE - it is a WHITE COP from the three four.
