2009 Mayoral Race Stirrings

Because September 8, 2009 is 776 days away, let's talk the 2009 mayoral race.

The Post reports that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly met with a "political guru" about his chances in the 2009 mayoral race. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne explained that Kelly was at a meeting that was also attended by Republican strategist Scott Reed, but politics weren't discussed. Still, Kelly's seems to be the name mentioned most often these days when speaking of possible Republican contenders - and he's not closing off himself to the possibility.

On the Democratic side, there's Representative Anthony Weiner, City Comptroller Bill Thompson, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and quite possibly City Councilman John Liu. Liu has raised $1.6 million for some sort of campaign, the most out of all City Council members, including Quinn. Liu told the Daily News, "I'm open to anything from dogcatcher to top dog. I know I want to serve in a citywide capacity. No matter what is down the road, it doesn't change the need to fund-raise."

Quinn has raised $1.4 million so far. As it happens, her mayoral ambitions were mentioned during a City Council meeting today: Quinn had fired City Council staffer Viola Plummer physically removed from chambers by police and security, while Plummer's (old) boss City Councilman (and 2009 Brooklyn Borough President candidate) Charles Barron shouted, "Christine, you will never be mayor!" Plummer was fired two weeks ago by Quinn, over Plummer's heckling, questionable statements, and refusal to sign a letter saying she'd behave during Council meetings.

And while September 8, 2009 is primary day; the general election is November 3, 2009.

What part of "FIRED" needs further explanation Ms. Plummer?

In most places where a former fired employee comes back, there would have been an ambulance called, and the employee would be answering questions to a mental health professional.

Another chapter of the Plummer and Barron sideshow that plays like a skit on a crummy late night public access show.

mayor weiner

hehehehehehehe

kelly's allergic to all types of democratic participation so he won't run. be interesting if he did, though - would the cops round up his supporters at his rallies, or herd them into corrals?

parsons (r) v. weiner (d), weiner by a landslide. you heard it hear first.

Demcrats still haven't learned anything about campaigning. The Democratic candidate will pander to the minorities and the unions and make it far closer than you think.

There's your next mayor, right there in the middle.

What, no Freddy Ferrer?

Seriously, I think the smart money would be on Weiner to win.

Seriously, I think the smart money would be on Weiner to win.

The Democrat who lost the primary when the general election was already guaranteed for the Republican?

I like him, and voted for him back then, but I think the smart money's pretty clearly on Quinn.

That's actually the dumb money.

What about Adolfo Carrion? (Bronx Boro Pres)

How 'bout we change the rules and bring back Bloomberg. If Menino can be mayor-for-life why not Bloomy? Anyone who's served on our ridiculous city council should be banned from running.

Gentlemen,

Mr. Ray Kelly is the only qualified person to become mayor of New York.

The rest of that gang are political hacks, with Mr. Quinn being the biggest one.

I preferred Mr. Quinn when he was honest with himself, and wore a mullet, with a flannel shirt.

I detest pretenders.

It's not Quinn -- she has alienated her base (Queens AND Chelsea) beyond anyone's wildest dreams. I went to school with her, was and would have been her biggest fan -- but she lost me when she leaned Mayor Mike.

It's also not Kelly -- his demographic (white men over 50) is fast becoming a minority. We are done with the iron fist daddy figure.

Wish I could say who it will be! Either Weiner or Thompson is my guess.

what a selection. Guess I'll take Anyone-but-the-redhead-loudmouth. Or Gary Coleman.

The only one that looks "Votable" is The Comptroller ! I wouldn't vote for the Council Speaker, Nor would I vote Anthony "Weiner" . Ray Kelly's not going to garner the necessary coverage for the position . Posted by;"Still not Amused"

This list of candidates is the best argument for the elimination of term limits.

If Kelly were to become mayor, he would have to wipe that shit-eating grin off of his face.

I'm still pissed at Carrion for getting rid of the community board in the Bronx when he didn't like their decision regarding Yankee Stadium, but I do think he's got a good chance to run at it.

Kelly is not mayoral, in my opinion. Ok Police Commissioner, but Mayor? Yick.

Weiner and Quinn would be ok, but they annoy me a bit, too. I wouldn't mind Thompson as Mayor. I think he'd do a good job.

Hey what about Tony Avella? He is running and should be in this story.

quinn all the way.

and i'm only a little bit ashamed that i support her soley because she's a lesbian...
