Karen Carpenter would not have liked today. Already an inch of rain has fallen in Central Park and another inch is likely before early afternoon. An urban flood advisory is in effect for the city and counties immediately to the east and west.
The rain, gust winds, and cool weather is being brought to us by a summer nor'easter. The storm is currently east of Virginia and will be zipping up toward Nova Scotia today. The will be out of here by mid-afternoon, but rain is likely through the evening hours. Winds off the ocean and heavy cloud cover will keep temperatures low today –expect a high only around 70, which is 15 degrees below normal.
Temperatures will be closer to normal tomorrow. A few leftover showers may plague us Tuesday morning before a drying out occurs in the afternoon. Wednesday is this week's weather winner! We can expect a mostly sunny and warm day. The chance of showers and thunderstorms returns on Thursday and increases through the weekend.
Today is the 35th anniversary of the launch of Landsat 1, the first in a series of high-resolution land surface observing satellites. To celebrate, here's a bunch of pretty pictures.

Karen Carpenter would not have liked today.
Just tell her that the clouds will be thinning out shortly.
(rimshot.)
I hope things stay dry for the QBQ BBQ this Saturday!
yay the CarpenterS
Poor Karen Carpenter. What a great voice.
If Mama Cass had only shared that ham sandwich with Karen, both of them might still be alive today.
Sorry! I just realized my #4 is in bad taste. I have enormous respect for both women.
Mama Cass didn't really choke on a ham sandwich anyway.
What kind of a sandwich did she choke on?
Mama Kass did of cardiac arrest. She was a fat junkie. She was eating at the time, however did not choke on the ham sandwich.
I'd like to give a shoutout to all the tiny women out there who feel the need to carry a completely uncontrollable beach umbrella six times the diameter that they really need. What up, ladies?
Thanks to the three of you who repeatedly ran your monstrosities into the back of my head this morning, sending rivers of freezing cold water in torrents down my back! Made my commute extra special.
Yeah, I especially like it when douchebags put their wet umbrellas next to them on empty train seats so you end up with a bunch of people standing because half the seats are wet.
I'm considerate, I hate umbrellas and wear a raincoat. Get a nice gore-tex one and you'll be set for any weather.
[11]: Right on. Gore-Tex is great stuff.
I would like to give a shout out to the RUDE woman on my bus this morning who put her soaking wet umbrella on the LAST seat on the bus this morning. She seemed to be afraid someone would come in contact with her awful weave and oversized ( I mean OVERSIZED) backpack.
Newsflash: Your weave was all frizzy and resembled a bird's nest. Oh and that backpack did not cover your large a*s, so quit trying...
Who knew some heavy rain could spark so much anger!
#4 that line's from a movie. I forget which one.
Good work, Joe.
