Last Night's Action: Bombardment Continues
- Yankees 21, Devil Rays 4: Every Yankee starter had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. The team put up 20 hits in consecutive games for the first time in more than 100 years. It scored 38 runs in less than 24 hours. Shelley Duncan had two home runs .Too bad the Devil Rays and their suspect pitching staff can't stay in the Bronx a little longer. The good news? The Yankees move on to Kansas City to face the Royals, a team not known for its pitching depth. The bad news? Boston won again to maintain its margin ahead of New York.
- Mets 5, Dodgers 4 (10 innings): Extra-inning games in the National League often produce unlikely heroes. Sunday's was Chip Ambres, who singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Mets took three of four from the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Orlando Hernandez didn't have his best stuff and the Mets couldn't get much off LA's Eric Stults. But a ninth-inning rally to tie it and Ambres' hit in the 10th made all that a pleasant afterthought.
- Storm 77, Liberty 75: Syosset's own Sue Bird hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to give the visiting Storm the win at the Garden. New York has lost four straight, and its promising start seems a distant memory.
- Red Bulls 1, United 0: This time, the local product scored for the home team. Staten Island's own John Wolyniec scored the game's lone goal as New York beat D.C. at home for the first time since 2004.
- Brooklyn 7, TriCity 3: Try losing after scoring runs in each of the first five innings. That's tough to do, and the Cyclones didn't do it. Moises Alou, out on a rehab assignment for the Mets, had an RBI to back Nicholas Waechter.
- Staten Island 4, State College 3: Scoring in each of the last three innings doesn't guarantee success. State College did just that but fell because of a three-run fourth. All the runs in that frame scored on a David Williams double.
