Beep Beep: Councilman Barron Eyes Brooklyn Borough Presidency

boroughhall.jpgCouncilman Charles Barron stood on the steps of Brooklyn's Borough Hall yesterday and announced that he would be running to become the first African-Amercian Borough President in Brooklyn's history. The Daily News reports that Barron wasted no time in denigrating the current Beep Marty Markowitz. "We've had a cheerleader. Now we need a real leader in Brooklyn." Barron was referring to Markowitz's seemingly perpetual sunny disposition and love of public appearances while looking faintly ridiculous.

If Markowitz has a diametrical opposite, it would probably be Barron, whose political style tends towards the angry and confrontational. He led several protestors earlier this year in an effort to get parks and streets named after confrontational black activist Sonnie Carson. His chief of staff was later barred from City Hall and then fired for making a death threat against Councilman Leroy Comrie.

Barron promised that if elected he would tackle issues important to his constituents, like affordable housing, police misconduct, health development, and race relations. Markowitz is not up for re-election because of term limits. If Barron were to win the election, he would take office in 2010.

The only way Barron would get elected is through the dead bodies of 1.5 million non-black Brooklyn residents.

Barron should be sent to jail for inciting hatred and causing public disorder and misuse of public office not running for office.

Anyone who advocates renaming a street after a racist terrorist like Carson should suffer the bastinado. Round his supporters up, put them on a barge, and tow them to Liberia. You want black power, here you go. So long Uncle Barron, don't forget to write.

whatever. it's the borough presidency, which has almost no power. it's a dog & pony show. what does this blowhard think he's going to be able to do about "affordable housing." i'm sure the trust-fundies are just DYING to diversify their neighborhoods.

I sense whitey will impose a poll tax to keep african americans from voting again. or worse.
Never Again.

Will this story bring out all of the racist trolls who really have nothing to say? And before you lose your minds or accuse me of race baiting I'm no fan of Councilman Barron.

I agree, Never Again.
racist trolls. driven away.

wow if the racist becomes borough pres says a ton about the folks who repeated vote for him.

Apparently the Brooklyn Beep post brings out the nuts. Just look at who is in the office now, someone who can't think rationally when pro sports are involved, no doubt due to a traumatic childhood experience involving a baseball team moving to Los Angeles.

Barron is just a racist nut who makes real civil rights leaders, like Martin Luther King, spin in their graves.

That said, the office of borough president is just a waste of money and resources and should be eliminated.

I used to think that nobody could be a bigger clown than Markowitz. Looks like I was wrong. Just what does Barron plan to do as Borough President? Change the name of Flatbush Avenue to Mugabe Avenue? LOL

You have to wonder why Barron even wants to leave City Council? City Council members definitely have more power than Borough Presidents do to bring about change. If Barron was really serious about improving the lot of his constituents, he'd stay right where he is now. Without a doubt, the latest antics of his Chief Aide, Viola Plummer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKsO0ZzAVXQ have severely damaged his standing among the other council members. It's possible that things have become so uncomfortable now for him in City Council that he's looking for a way out. As the saying goes, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Geez, what a wus.

The City Council also has term limits, and I believe Barron's term ends in 2009.

God Bless You Charlie Barron.
We need more politicians tackling the issues you're talking about.

Sorry, Charlie. You're not going to be Mayor, U.S. Representative--or Borough President. Your appeal is limited to the ill-informed and racists. You've just alienated way too many people. As far as political office is concerned, consider your goose cooked.

Brooklyn Loves Charles Barron.
believe it.

The ghetto loves Charles Barron. Period.

Barron should go work for Mugabe if he likes it so much, I'm sure they would take him with open arms in Zimbabwe!

People of the ghetto are held hostage by they victim hood and this guy just reinforces it.

me mugabe booga wooga,
you guys crack me up.
Brooklyn Loves Barron.

Barron is a terrorist

"Barron wasted no time in denigrating" -- wasn't there a verb you could have used here that was less racially ominous (denigrate, from Latin de+niger/nigra/nigrum, - literally to blacken.)

I think Dom Defara would be a fantastic boro president, as he represents everything that Brooklyn is really all about: Hard work, doing what you love, not letting the system get you down, treating your fellow Brooklynites like human beings and the hands down best pizza in the world! Let's all remember what makes Brooklyn, Brooklyn.

I have watched Charles Barron for many years and I really don't think he can control his racial hatred and effectively work for anyone outside what he considers his group.

Then again I have seen a lot of people do a lot of things for money.

Honestly, anyone but Marty. He sells Brooklyn out every chance he gets, and we'd be better off with a racist moron who cares than with our current cynical kleptocrat.

Charles Barron's values are my values,
Charles Barron's concerns on Brooklyn are my concerns.
We don't want Brooklyn sold to the highest bidder or developer.

If there's one thing that pisses me off, it's the term "Beep". Fucking Post and News.

Once again, for those who don't get it. The position of Borough President is for the most part ceremonial (think Queen of England). Unlike City Council, this job doesn't have the power to pass bills.

Actually, I kind of wince whenever I see Marty, but he did do a fairly decent job of promoting the borough of Brooklyn, even if he did play to a certain stereotype. Now you even see tour buses driving around Brooklyn.

I see the liberal fags are out in force today.

They want thought crimes to apply to everyone who doesn't have the right "racial attitude".

I believe in the United States, where a person can say and think however they like, as long as they don't force their thinking onto others.

I guess the liberal fags don't think that way, and that's why they cry racism whenever someone says something that's not politically correct, like this Charles Barron apparently did.

Charles Barron is missing the point by wanting to be the Beep. It IS a cheerleader post, not a real position of influence or power.

Charlie Barron would make a great cheerleader for Brooklyn! LOL Charlie isn't about bringing people together, he's about dividing them.

As city councilman, Barron was only part of working group. As a politician, he needed to work in consensus with other city council members in order to obtain programs and funding for his district. But Barron is a one-man show. He doesn't like working in consensus with which is why he wasn't able to obtain much in actual programs for his district.

Yeah, he talked tough which appealed to many people. But he just talked big and didn't actually deliver much to his district. Ironically, the people who elected him are the ones who really lost out.
