Today, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will be kicking off another year of "Lighten Up Brooklyn" with a walk around Brooklyn Heights. "Lighten Up Brooklyn" was started a few years ago to encourage Brooklynites to lose weight and make their lifestyles healthier. And since he had stents put into his arteries last year, Lighten Up Brooklyn is a big deal to Markowitz. From his office's press release:
Markowitz, who underwent a stent procedure last summer, vowed to transform and lengthen his life through healthy eating and a committed fitness regimen. The borough president’s frequent energetic strolls through Prospect Park have helped him lose 26 pounds since last summer, and he kicks off the Lighten Up Brooklyn 2007 not only talking the talk, but also walking the walk!
Markowitz will apparently show off his newly "svelte" look (though we think he showed it off at the opening of the Floating Pool the other week) at Columbus Park (Borough Hall Plaza - Court & Remsen Streets) at noon today to lead a walk to the Promenade. The other events include a Saturday walk along the Bay Ridge waterfront, a tour of Victorian Flatbush, a tour of Crown Heights and a Sunday walk from the Parachute Jump to Brighton Beach and back with Al Puma, a 77-year-old triathlete (earlier this year he participated in the Empire State Building run-up).
The entire press release after the jump.

Stop eating fried, greasy, heart-clogging foods. Eat way more fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
And, please, stop feeding your kids potato chips and soda - I've seen babies eating and drinking that stuff in their strollers on the subway. Hello, parents - that is why your kids are obese.
This is a good campaign. I live in Brooklyn and could certainly stand to lead a more healthy lifestyle.
That said, please no more shirtless photo ops, Marty.
True #1, I even have friends who give soda and sugary cake to their twin boys, and the father's a doctor! I don't know if its out of laziness or exhaustion.
Marty Markowitz can eat a low-fat dick.
my cousin is a young girl who is morbidly obese, who never eats vegetables cause she hates the taste and wants to be a doctor!!!! all cause my aunt spoils her. Sadness.
Totally a terrible excuse, #3, right? Trader Joes (even Pathmark!) sells bags of sliced apples (no slicing or washing needed) and carrot sticks. Even a piece of whole-wheat toast is better than a piece of cake.
Sigh!
In the past, I've been a big fan of Marty's for being an effective Brooklyn cheerleader. With the Atlantic Yards fiasco, however, my opinion of him has taken a nosedive. And then yesterday, my opinion further deteriorated: at about 6:50 PM, while riding my bicycle along Prospect Park West, I saw Marty and his driver get into his gas guzzling vehicle with the BKLYN BP plates and pull away from the curb. They proceeded to go through not one but two red lights on PPW between 11th St. and PPSW. Marty must be responsible for the conduct of his driver and his vehicle. God forbid a child had been hit.
Marty really....REALLY... has to spend more time with his shirt on.
Allowing your children to have an unhealthy diet should be considered child abuse.
People don't give their kids fast food all the time just because it's cheap. They do it because they are stupid and lazy. In fact, a simple, healthy home cooked meal is probably cheaper than a happy meal at McDonald's.
i think marty should start showing up to groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings shirtless.. dude is cut.
Brooklyn has to be one of the easiest places in the world to eat decent, healthy food. Even the lowliest of corner delis sells fresh fruits and veggies for the price of a soda or a candy bar. Not to mention the 9 billion health food stores and restaurants. I know this is a pretty prejudiced, unpopular thing to say...but fat people are gross. I'm not talking about some chub or flab or meat on your bones, but the very huge. There is no excuse for treating your body that way.
#7: I totally agree about Marty's handling of the Atlantic Yards project, but I still think he's great for Brooklyn overall. He's visible, he shows up at everything and he's 100% Brooklyn. If nothing else, those 'Leaving Brooklyn? Fugghedaboutit' signs on the BQE are brilliant.
I get a little mad inside when I see toddlers eating Utz chips at 8am in the morning on the subway.
I agree with Nick S. Marty looks um um goooood!
#12, I totally agree...and then I just get sad. it brings to mind that infamous pic of the McDonalds kid floating around online, the one whose arms like the Michelin Man.
This is the reason why there's a Marty Markowitz bobble-head night at Keyspan Park! I only with my very own Adolfo Carrion wasn't such a coño.
Marty is a sell out. To think I admired him, now I despise him.
Awesome; that first one should be the photo on Marty's wikipedia page

He doesnt look that bad for being 100 years old.
Talk about "Lighten up" Marty needs to "Lighten up" on all that shit he eats ! You fat fuck eat a carrot for a change ! That's what I'd like to see Marty Markowitz doing to support Brooklyn . Do an ad with a Carrot in his hand telling all whom visit Brooklyn to eat right, & stay in shape ! For the kids have him dress up like Bugs Bunny, No maybe Bug's fat uncle "Fester" Bunny ! Posted by; "Still Not Amused"
Chicago needs this.
Bxbrian- I don't think you used the word "cono" properly. Did you perhaps mean another derogatory Spanish term?
The Brooklyn floating pool is awesome. And since I love all things Brooklyn, I have to love Marty. Hey, the man sent me a special certificate in honor of my Brooklyn wedding. How can you not love that? :)
