East Village, L.E.S. on Alert For Serial Sex Attacker

The police are looking for a man they believe may be involved with four sexual attacks in the East Village and Lower East Side. The Daily News ran a graphic (pictured) of showing where and when the attacks have occurred. Early yesterday morning, a 20-year-old woman was attacked at East 9th and Second Avenue, as the Sun puts it, "just steps away from the bright lights of the 24-hour Veselka Restaurant."

The other attacks occurred in other parts of the East Village and on Mott Street, near Prince. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the latest attack is "seen as part of the pattern," with all the attacks happening in the early morning, when women are entering their buildings. The attacker puts the woman into a chokehold, and, in one case, the News reports, "one of the cases the man put his arm around a victim's neck and caused her to pass out for a short period."

A reader left this comment to yesterday's post:

just some additional information - i live in the building on e. 12th st where the attack took place last week. your article understates the seriousness of the attack - according to the neighbors that rushed to help, the rapist wrestled the woman to the ground and was getting ready to rape her when they startled him. so i just want to make sure that readers realize that there's an extremely violent and dangerous rapist on the loose in the East Village.

here a few tips if you absolutely have to walk home alone at night:
-- always look behind you before you enter your building. if there's someone behind you, let them walk in first (so they can't trap you in between the double doors - that's what happened in my building)
-- if you're being attacked, scream "CALL THE POLICE" - we were woken up by screams in our building, but our first thought wasn't to call the police, since we were assuming it's a domestic dispute of some sort and we couldn't see anything out the window. by the time police got to the scene, the rapist escaped.

An East 9th Street resident told the Post he had been watching TV when he heard muffled noises during yesterday's attack, "After what I hear now I am sorry I didn't look out the window."

There's a child molestor abductor running around in Brooklyn.

I would think someone preying on innocent children is more of a concern than someone copping feels on drunk girls staggering home from a night of debauchery.

what a stupid comment # 1

I have to say this is defiantly important to let people know about. Being a women in NY is really scary. Between walking around late at night and dirty men making comments at you...or calling at you as if you were an animal...and then riding the subway alone in the middle of the night, Its dangerous and I always worry. And also let me just say that it has nothing to do with being drunk or dressing slutty, men will bother u in this city no matter what.

It's actually wiser to always scream "FIRE". You're more likely to get attention that way.

women should wear an electrified chastity belt when going out. switch it on when you feel danger. zap that penis down to a gherkin pickle. bumps and all.
or an electrified force field. I'm for the electric vag.

This is idiotic:

"if you're being attacked, scream "CALL THE POLICE" - we were woken up by screams in our building, but our first thought wasn't to call the police, since we were assuming it's a domestic dispute of some sort and we couldn't see anything out the window. by the time police got to the scene, the rapist escaped."

So if it's just some dude beating the crap out of his wife, then fine? Don't bother to call the cops? That makes a lot of sense, genius.

Here's a tip: You hear someone screaming--call the police.

"I would think someone preying on innocent children is more of a concern than someone copping feels on drunk girls staggering home from a night of debauchery."

are you kidding me?

you're an ass, commenter no 1.

New York City is not that dangerous number 4. Remember, there are 8 million people here.

Domestic disputes with screaming don't necessarily have to have hitting, number 7.

Yeah, #1, what an idiotic comment. So any woman who is walking home late at night is automatically coming home from a night of "drunken debauchery?" And even if she was out partying, that gives someone the right to rape her? Oh, I forgot. We're supposed to sit in the house in our aprons and observe an 8 o'clock curfew.

Instead of telling women not to walk around their own city, TELL MEN NOT TO RAPE.

user-pic

Whoa, my friend lives near there. I actually walked five or six blocks to her apartment at about 3:45am and felt really safe. A lot of clubs/bars and people out.

NYC's still pretty safe, per capita.

user-pic

#11, NYC may be pretty safe, per capita, but statistics won't matter if you're a victim.

user-pic

Seriously, no. 1, go fuck yourself. I guess a woman walking home late at night deserves it because she isn't home darning socks.

Another tip for women: If you are walking home alone , put your keys in your palm with the key jutting out between your fingers. If you get face to face with the asshole, you go right for the throat.

To #1:

I'm a 19 year old girl in the East Village, and heaven forbid I stay out past midnight lest I be a drunken whore just asking for rape. Yeah, blame the victim. Obviously, I couldn't be doing anything else, like holing myself up in the Hunter library to finish a project, or seeing a show at UCB theatre.

You're right, let's NOT educate America's men and boys on how to respect (and not go around raping) women and girls, and I'll just don a burqa and make sure I stay indoors after 6 pm like the good little subjugated baby-making machine I oughta be.

Fuck you.

user-pic

ha ha. i hope he rapes you too. and if you are reading this, i hope he rapes you up the ass.

user-pic

Number #15, you would really wish that upon someone? Clearly there must be no one you love or who loves you. It is pathetic and disgusting that you would say such a thing. Just remember, what goes around comes around.

user-pic

Wow number #1 you have some incredibly twisted ideas about gender and sexual abuse. So what once women reach a certain age it's OK to molest them? If they're out past midnight they're just open property for people? Even beyond that if a women is out late she's clearly been drinking and having sex which means she deserves to be abused? I don't know if I should feel more disgust or more pity for you.
