Video of the Day: One Night of Fire

Something to distract you from today's soggy weather. One Night of Fire is a roving street party organized each year by the Danger, a group that is committed to “creating nights of indelible beauty.”

This past Saturday, thousands of people dressed in white lined the Brooklyn Bridge with drums, stilts, hoops, and a Metrocard. First stop: City Hall. Permanent smiles marked the faces of angels caring fabric-cut flames on poles. Colors of white and red lit up the night as costumed bodies and painted faces danced to the beat of organic sounds. Next stop: Dekalb Avenue. Packed subway cars shook as people danced and sang their way to DeKalb.

Last stop: CONEY ISLAND! People flooded the station, stopping to dance with MTA workers. Lines quickly formed for hot dogs and beer. A few people dove into the cold, dark water. Drum circles formed. And Fire spinners performed to wide, reflective eyes. One night seemed to spark enough fire to keep the soul of this city burning for (at least) a little while.

This event sounds like shit.

So, the cops don't give them a hard time for this.. but they arrest people at a Critical Mass?

1. This event was coordinated not to block traffic, and didn't, even with 2000 people in attendance.
2. The people with flags were very quick to curb any animosity from the crowd directed at the police.

There's no comparison with the baiting and traffic snarling that goes on at CM. Of course they let this party go forward.
There's no reason for CM to be so unruly. It's working against the greater good in some ways. Maybe try a new approach one week, as an experiment?

cue the inevitable, i'm closed-minded and have no imagination, therefore this event must only cater to hipsters, therefore it sucks comment.

CM gets targeted 4 being stupid enough to protest the RNC. the NYPD has not let up since.

Did this group get a permit as required?

user-pic

they still make ecstacy?

That parade permit will be tossed out soon enough. Remember, Congress shall make no law abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble. It's right there in that thing, what's it called? Oh, yeah, the Bill of Rights.

BTW this was a BLAST! and the video does it NO justice at all. The cops all had smiles on their faces and were very helpful throughout the night. Everything was peaceful and non-destructive. The cops even opened the gates at the subway to let everyone in a few hundred at a time without even using our metrocards.

I agreed with SikBug. Video sucks. The best stuff was left out.

A different video that gives the arc of the whole event a little better:

Oh hey, totally awesome! My photoset was linked to on Gothamist, Huzzah! - Del Far

wasn't trying to make a feature film here folks. i got what i could given the darkness. also i took my camera to grab some shots, NOT to spend the whole night filming the thing. I wanted to participate too.

Video isn't so bad, but there wasn't any fire included...the other video had plenty.
