The MTA is refreshing its campaign to remind mass transit riders to "See Something, Say Something" with some new print and television spots. The work acknowledges that the MTA and/or the police received 1,944 tips in 2006 (a total of 9,000 calls were made to 888-NYC-SAFE). MTA Executive Director and CEO Elliot G. Sander said, "We are proud that our customers play such an active role in keeping the system safe, and I am not surprised that the campaign has been copied around the world, from Chicago to Amsterdam. Keeping our customers safe remains the MTA's top priority."
What's interesting is that the NYPD enacted "Operation Lucky Bag" on subway platforms last year; they leave unattended shopping carts and bags to sting thieves. Of course, there may have been some mix-ups. How confusing!
The new ads are running between now and November. But our favorite "See Something, Say Something" poster is the one with K-9 German Shepherd Haggs outside a Union Square subway entrance - he's so cute!

if you see something
say something
especially if he has brown skin
I thought we were winning the war on terror, just like were winning the war on drugs..
Cute dog though
especially if he has brown skin,a big beard, and wants to kill you and your family
he's a beautiful dog, not fat,
perfect size.
the best meat.
I gotta hand it to the MTA for this one. They created a campaign that has really taken off. It's right up there with 'Got milk?' Every New Yorker knows this tag line and it's not nearly as scary as it could be. Using the dogs is a great way to bring the message home without freaking people out.
tell you what i "see":
the erosion of the very freedoms we are supposedly "protecting"
I said something once to an MTA employee, it was an unattended bag just sitting on the platform. I watched it for about 5 minutes, nobody claimed it. I mentioned it to somebody, and they said "well what the fuck do you want me to do about it? Shit, tell the cops or somethin"
So ... 1,944 tips, and how many terrorist attacks foiled?
I CAN HAS TERORIST?
What a weird set of data. If only 1,994 tips were received, out of 9,000 calls to the hotline... what were the other 7,006 calls about?
if you see something, mind your own business,
it could be a "lucky bag"
you don't want to be in the clink, do you? this goes double if you're a person of color. Let whitey handle it.
sorry, jen, I see you have a Lucky bag reference in your post.
that's why I luv ya, you're looking out for us.
We citizens are behind you 110 percent.
1,994 calls! How many were total overreactions to a box of cookies that some lady forgot to take with her that ended up sending our commutes down the toilet?
tell you what i "see":
the erosion of the very freedoms we are supposedly "protecting"
Which freedom exactly are you being deprived of?
I can see you losers during WW II. "What? You expect me to accept rationing? I have to cover my windows at night in case there are bombers? Fuck you. I'm a New Yorker and I do what I want."
They may not all have beards... but they all have huge, hooked, semite noses (arabs are semites)
It's the least you can do. The very least.
I was on the train a few months ago and a guy dropped a bag next to the pole by the door an walked away from it. Every head in the car snapped to the bag. It was full of religious pamphlets that he was handing out.
If he was not brown would I have nearly crapped myself? Probably not. Do I see that as prejudicial? Not unnecessarily so. In Oklahoma I'd have my eye on the militia types. On the 4 train Muhammad is going to be the one that ends up blowing my arm off, not some guy in khakis and a polo shirt.
the german shepard was born in the czech republic? did the NYPD import the dog? Dont they BUY AMERICAN?
That's PC kelly for ya, he loves to spend money.
for instance, those Italian scooters. and the mayor gives it to him.
Since Italians make the most reliable scooters why wouldn't the NYPD buy them?
Although the dog is Czech, he looks more German. Do they even have sheep in Czechoslovakia?
the dog is the terrorist! all you lefty douches worried about your freedoms being eroded due to community awareness deserve to be sterilized. god help us if one of you is in charge of something and have to take responsibility. you'll be crying like a bitch when achmed blows his sack on the subway, and then you'll blame the nypd for dropping the ball - pc assholes. back to ohio with all of you!!
where did you hear that those Italian scooters are reliable? you hipster.
go back to your velopeepee, lambreepeepee
So the cops leave suspicious bags laying about to snag would be thieves? Isn't that called entrapment? Do they not have better things to do? And should we now call the cops terrorists? Along with everything else that relates to the 'war on terror', I'm confused. :(
It's not entrapment unless the police plant the idea for the crime in the head of the criminal. If a person steals an unattended package they have formed the intent to steal without the aid of the police. It would be entrapment if an undercover officer struck up a conversation with a stranger and mentioned that 'that bag would be very easy to steal. no-one is looking, you should go for it.'
To all Of you folks trying to infringe upon my rights to privacy .... Fuck You ! I don't have a problem with the police searching my belongings . As long as I handle those belongings and the search is confined to the prospective search . (That means if the officers searching for "Terror related" items, That's what their looking for period .) Don't get me wrong here, I'm not supporting the criminal element . The rights that you as an American were afforded at birth do not expire, Nor do they change through alteration . See what most people do get here is that the "Scope" of these searches are purposely being introverted to give the police added powers that they legally do not have . It's just convenient to use the term "Terror" and expect both the judges, & Public to go along with it . Posted by; "Still Not Amused"
I happen to have some personal information proving that these numbers are false.
