Messy Morning, Messy Morning Commute

2007_07_mtaalerts.JPGWhen we checked the MTA's Service Alerts for NYC Transit early this morning, there was only a note was flooding causing issues with F service between Jamaica-179th Street Station and the Forest Hills-71st Avenue Station. Now there's a laundry list of subway issues:

Due to a water condition at the Parsons Boulevard Station, there is no F train service between the Jamaica-179th Street Station and the Forest Hills-71st Avenue Station.
- Stations being bypassed are:169th Street, Parsons Boulevard, Sutphin Boulevard and Briarwood-Van Wyck Expressway.
- As an alternate route, customers are advised to take the Q43 bus to the Sutphin Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue bus stop and take the j train at the Supthin Boulevard Station.

Also, due to a water condition at the 65th Street Station:
- There is no V train service the entire line.
- There is no E and R train service between the Queens Plaza Station and the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue Station.
- There is no F train service between the 21St Street-Queensbridge Station and the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue Station.
- As an alternate customers are advised to take the Q60 bus, J, 7, N trains to and from Manhattan.

In addition, due to a water condition at the Kingsbridge Road Station, 205th Street-bound D trains are running express between the Tremont Avenue Station and the Bedford Park Boulevard Station.

- Stations being bypassed are: 182nd Street-183rd Street, Fordham Road and Kingsbridge Road.
- For service to bypassed stations customers are advised to take the 205th Street-bound d train to the Bedford Park Boulevard Station and take a Coney Island-bound D train.

Please expect delays in service on the D, E, F and R trains at this time.

Also expect delays on the B - one B express ended up waiting in the station for 5 minutes for a B express-turned-local to arrive, to collect confused, annoyed passengers. There are also service alerts for LIRR, Metro-North, and LI Bus.

There have been delays on bridges, tunnels and highways, due to the weather and flooding. Naturally, there are tons of delays at the airports - Newsday reports that the FAA has put the "Traffic Management Program" into effect at JFK and LaGuardia. To discuss: Doesn't "Traffic Management Program" sounds like something that should be in effect every day?

Shocker: Power outages reported in NYC, mostly Queens. (Remember, Con Ed blamed lightning for some recent power outages.)

Could you imagine if just the remnants of a hurricane or tropical storm hit? This small storm really shows the weakness of the infrastructure here.

NYC has a third world infrastructure. And we're paying so much taxes so they can send it to places like Israel or Colombia.

time to get an inflatable raft.

I love how the MTA's solution to no E, V, F and R service is to "Take the N or the 7". Only a tiny portion of Astoria is within a walking distance of both N and E/F/R/V, and small parts of Woodside and Jackson Heights can reach both the E/F/R/V and 7. How is this a solution? Yet another FUCK YOU from NYC to Queens.

After two attempts to come in to work, we just turned around. The Bus was naturally delayed and after an attempt to drive to the subway, we just gave up. Thankfully, I can telecommute, but my wife took a personal day.

Hmmmmm... I need to get to JFK this afternoon and do not want to pay $45 for a cab!!! I am right by the 53rd st/Lexington Ave E station, usually jump right on the E to the Air Train... any idea if E train service will be back running by about 3pm today? Or, any alternate routes to the Air Train?

now imagine a few hundred thousand extra passengers on this system... i donut own a car, but i'm kind of glad that congestion BS didn't go anywhere.

#6- there are buses from near grand central that go to the area airports. I think it's around $21 to JFK? More expensive than airtrain, less expensive than cab.

NYC has a third world infrastructure.
Of course, any time a way to raise money to improve the infrastructure is suggested, people trip over themselves in the rush to complain about it. Fare hikes? Congestion pricing? Everyone wants the system to be better but everyone expects someone else to pay for it.

there's those buses by Grand central and Port authority or call the Super Shuttle.

Anyone know where in Queens there were power outages?

What a mess.
I've only lived in NY for 5 years. I'm curious, has the subway always been so susceptible to a little rain or is this a new thing?

I first moved to NYC 10 years ago and cannot believe they haven't invested in a better speaker/announcement system. I waited for the V at 23rd and Ely for 45 minutes of hearing a nearly unintelligible announcement about delays ending with "please be patient" only to find out there was no V running.

I think overall the system is pretty good but at least invest in a better speaker/announcement system in both stations and on the trains! I could have taken an alternate route instead of waiting for the V for close to an hour.

Take the LIRR from Penn to Jamaica and transfer to the AirTrain there.

RTD2101: Yeah, it has always been affected by heavy rain as long as I've been here, which is my whole life. Overall though, the subway has vastly improved especially with regards to safety, but also I think the service is more reliable in general. Why I was a kid in the early 80's the subway was scary. You weren't taking the RR at midnight unless you were Charles Bronson.

The shoddy quality of the speaker systems in the subways is legendarily horrific. I mean that's one of the oldest running jokes in NYC...

The subway here is fantastic in my opinion. Sure Paris, London, DC are quieter, and run to more of a schedule, but they close at midnight. For 24/7 365 a year transportation at $2 bucks a pop or less, the subway is pretty awesome.

@RYD2101:

I actually would say the subways gotten a lot worse over the last 7 years I've been here, at least in terms of its susceptibility to inclement weather. I asked around my office this morning and the natives here agree.

@emilydickinson:

don't get wrong, I love the subway, but I totally feel like it's falling apart under the weight of more and more and more commuters and corrupt/inefficient management.

The F in Brooklyn was it's usual disaster. Ridiculous wait and then tons of people couldn't fit on the train at the Carroll and Bergen stops.

12 Billion $ a month for Iraq, and I can't ge to work, without getting on a crowded subway every morning. The rain took out the subway at 8:00am.

blame the previous MTA Mis management.
I'm even noticing subway cars with non working doors now.

does anyone know if you can get the Q60 bus from the 21st street-queensbridge stop on the F train? the queens bus map is a mess to look at .....

#6 Take the E-train the other direction, switch to the A-train at times square and take the A-train to Howard Beach, then take the Airtrain from there.

The subway system, on a normal, dry day, pumps out 13 million gallons of water! So when a lot of rain comes down fast, it's hard for some of the drains and pumping to keep up. (Back in 2004, when Hurricane Frances visited, at least 10 subway lines were screwed.)

And if the pumps weren't working at all, it could look like this.

The MTA is probably the best example of financial corruption in NYC. What does it take to get these theives to do their job with the more than ample funds at their disposal. This is another reason why all the hot air about congestion pricing federal grant money is full of shit. What makes anyone think that throwing even more money at the MTA will improve public transportation? Why is there no investigative reporting about the finances and responsibility of the MTA?

#23, why do you think the MTA has "more than ample" funds at its disposal? I assume you've done the analysis to support this assertion, and aren't just running at the mouth.

remember the MTA had two sets of books and refused to show them.
that's what you get from an organization run by mr. cufflinks and his cronies.

Buses are operating with delays due to flooding in certain areas.

Due to an ongoing water condition:

There is no v train service on the entire line.

As an alternate, customers are advised to take the f and r trains.

Please expect delays in service on the e, f and r trains at this time.

wow that only took six hours.

59th Street was a MESS earlier today. An empty Queens-bound N train was sitting there for a good 20 minutes. A Brooklyn-bound N train arrived and everyone got off, making the platform one big mess.

Quit Ur Bitching People ! You all know the routine here, Every time we get measurable rains this same thing happens ! So why all the surprise ? When it started pouring this morning, I knew it was going to be one of them days so I prepared for it . Then the whole "Steam pipe" explosion happened and that just set the tone in flux for the day !
