EV Sex Assault Possibly Connected to Other Attacks

2007_07_evsus.jpgEarly this morning, a 20-year-old woman was groped on East 9th Street. The victim told police she was followed into her building at 312 East 9th Street around 2AM; the attacker came up from behind. WABC 7 reports that after grabbing and groping the woman, the attacker fled the scene.

The suspect is described as a 20-something Hispanic man, around 5'9", with a stocky, muscular build. The police are investigating whether this attack is connected to other incidents in the East Village and Lower East Side. A 30-year-old was attacked on July 7, a 24-year-old on July 12, and this past Friday, a 33-year-old was grabbed (her neighbors encountered but were unsuccessful in detaining the attacker). All the attacks occurred in the early morning.

Update: The Post describes the man in the sketch as a "bike-riding pervert" - he was "masturbating on his bike" before following the 24-year-old woman into her Chinatown building on July 12. The July 7 attack was in the East Village, the July 13 attack was on East 12th. A police source told the Daily News, "He follows people into their residence. He comes up behind them and choke holds them."

Eat 9th Street

:P

Not much sleep last night?

Thanks, Alex. And, actually, no, not a very good night's sleep.

I'm trying to dig around to find more info about the assaults and where/when they occurred. Hopefully I'll be able to find more by the end of day.

oh shit! i have a friend that this happened to about 2 years ago. the guy matches her description perfectly. ::forwarding article::

he looks like alot of mexicans, with the cap. but anyway he is tall for a mexican.

Check the projects.

Here's hoping that some street justice happens to this asshat.

user-pic

i don't understand how anyone can be a sex criminal. it's so creepy. you have to be really mentally deranged to do this stuff.

user-pic

I meant, check the video logs in all the projects in the area.

user-pic

Traumatizing innocent women for a cheap thrill has got to be one of the shitti*st ways to spend your time here on Earth.

Hopefully this scumbag gets caught and spends some quality time in jail getting groped by his new boyfriends Handsome Hal, Perverted Pete and Backdoor Billy.

Payback is a b*tch

user-pic

Like I've said before. A nice little concealed piece woulda kept this fucker's hands to himself.

It's timed for concealed and carry people...it's time.

user-pic

oh, that's right, 10.34, you jacka$$. if she were able to "conceal[] and carry" there's no way HE would have had a gun.

go back to kentucky.

user-pic

Yes, the ability to carry concealed firearms prevents all crime. That's why there's never any crime in Texas.

user-pic

That's why violent crime has PLUMMETED in Texas and other states where C & C now exists.

Leave it to the midwest to once again set the moral standard of this country.

You've already given it up. Manhattan looks more and more like the suburbs of Kansas City everyday. You're welcome, don't let it go back to the garbage that NYc used to be...

user-pic

while we are at it, be on the look out for a white male in brooklyn who molested a seven year old girl and left her miles from home with NO PANTIES.
smell his fingers.

I live on Orchard between Delancey and Broome. On July 7th cops on the street asked me if I had heard anything at 4:30 AM because someone was attacked - I wonder if this is connected? They didn't give me details.

#13: Violent crime has plummeted in Texas? How about in Florida (they have C&C don't they)? Does Louisiana have C&C? I bet their violent crime statistics haven't plummeted.

Do you have a link to any published crime statistics to back your argument?

Also, did the decrease in violent crime mirror a nationwide trend? Were their other factors involved? I bet we can link a decrease in violent crime to an increase in iPod ownership if we are creative enough.

Just glazing right over the guest comments here... thank you Gothamist. Hope they catch the creep.

#16, You want to know why there are more high casualty mass murder incidents nowadays? Virginia Tech, Columbine, etc..

It's because of all these "Gun Free Zones". Gunmen never killed more than a few people in the past because school security and other authorities always were carrying guns and took down shooters right away. At VT there was no one with any guns because VT had recently gone "Gun Free". Had that dude tried that shit a year or two before he would have killed less than 10 before being shot by security or even one of the people in the classrooms. We need guns to protect us. Like this girl needed one last night.

#13 and I am assuming #18: Do you have any actual evidence for your points, or just your continuing assumption that having free fire zones makes us safer?

The problem is gun laws are lax in some places and not in others. If you couldn't easily get guns somewhere, the threat wouldn't be there.

user-pic

The nation's two highest spree killings in history coming in the last 10 years isn't evidence enough?

But if you insist...

define "easily"
I've never understood that. I can't get a gun "easily". maybe it's because I'm a person with a clean record and do not socialize with criminals.
If it were easy, they'll be more guns out there.
it's not easy. that's like the "gunshow loophole"
no such thing. there's no "loophole".

The media is training people into killing more and more. You get to be a star by mass murder. Bush and Cheney know this. Ask the tens of thousands dead children in Iraq killed by US weapons. Oh wait, they're dead.

This is all pretty off topic, but whatever.

The crime rate in Western European countries is much lower than it is in this country. These countries have widespread, strict gun laws. If we enacted the same laws, our crime rate would drop as well.

The ease in which you can purchase a firearm changes from state to state. It is much more difficult to buy one here than say Alabama.

A spic molester in the news again - surprise, surprise

#18: I didn't know Ted Nugent read Gothamist! Welcome Nuge!

can we get some facts and truth to this statement: *That's why violent crime has PLUMMETED in Texas and other states where C & C now exists.*

link please.

these type of attacks need updated laws.

1st offense: 25 years in jail, no parole.

2nd offense: Death.

just some additional information - i live in the building on e. 12th st where the attack took place last week. your article understates the seriousness of the attack - according to the neighbors that rushed to help, the rapist wrestled the woman to the ground and was getting ready to rape her when they startled him. so i just want to make sure that readers realize that there's an extremely violent and dangerous rapist on the loose in the East Village.

here a few tips if you absolutely have to walk home alone at night:
-- always look behind you before you enter your building. if there's someone behind you, let them walk in first (so they can't trap you in between the double doors - that's what happened in my building)
-- if you're being attacked, scream "CALL THE POLICE" - we were woken up by screams in our building, but our first thought wasn't to call the police, since we were assuming it's a domestic dispute of some sort and we couldn't see anything out the window. by the time police got to the scene, the rapist escaped.
