171 Starbucks In One Day

Picture%203.pngIncase anyone was wondering just how many Starbucks there actually are in Manhattan, the answer is 171. For some inexplicable reason (perhaps to become the next big viral video star), New Yorker Mark Malkoff decided to hit them all up in just one day.

On June 29th at 5:30am Malkoff makes his first of many purchases at 181st and Washington Heights, then for over twelve hours he travels by bike from store to store until a friend with a car decides to help him out. His caffeine-fueled journey ends at 60th and Broadway at 2:56am, we can't imagine he got much sleep for the next few days. Watch his video here.

Just how much did Starbucks shake out of his pockets in just over 20 hours? The grand total came to $369.14. This figure would have been less if a barista at 96th and Madison didn't accept an $80 bribe for a piece of pound cake after hours...and if he also didn't make accidental repeat visits to six of the same Starbucks.

Next up: the Duane Reade Challenge?

Douche. Bag.

Isn't going to 1 Starbucks a big enough waste of time and money?

Feh, he just hit all the ones in Manhattan.

It would be very difficult to think of an activity that would brand you as a bigger loser than going to 171 Starbucks in one day. (In one LIFETIME even)

This is almost as funny as an Ingmar Bergman film.

There are fools, and then there is this guy.

#4, I can think of one: I'm a native Washingtonian, and a few years ago, I remember reading an article in the Washington Post magazine about a guy who was trying to visit every Starbucks in the UNITED STATES. I'm serious. He would work for a few months in one place, earn some money, crash with a friend or family member or in a hotel room, then hit the road, literally just going to Starbucks all day long. I don't know what happened, if he gave it up or what, but I think he mentioned that several are built every day, so it would be pretty much impossible to accomplish.

You all are complete haters. This is hilarious!

I want to see his route done like one of those annoying family circus cartoons where little Billy is running around his neighborhood and getting into all sorts of hyjinx.

this can't be real. did he just buy and not drink them? if it were me, i would be dying to pee. i don't think nyc has any public restrooms besides the ones at the parks. what's the point anyway? whoopdie doo.

I love Starbucks as much as the next guy, but wouldn't blow out my heart for viral video fame.

Who needs public restrooms when the next Starbucks is two blocks away? I hope for his sake most of them were decaf.

But... there's a bathroom in every Starbucks, basically, right?

this guy is small potatoes compared to the duane reed dude. now that took some stamina considering the average wait time to check out was over 20 minutes!

How can he repeat 6! stores?!? You see, caffeine is not good for you... makes you forget where you've been...

what a dumb @$$. I mean seriously? Why?!

The Internet turns everyone into a bad comedian. MAN!HAT!TAN!

That starbucks employee who accepted the bribe to simply give the man a piece of cake they would have thrown out should be reprimanded. Accepting an 80 dollar bribe not only says a lot about her character but also the moral of their employees. I'm a waitress and I don't accept bribes unless it's a valid tip for good service, not to get someone something "extra". She makes me sad to be in this industry.

Anyway, I wonder how many Starbucks (not including the cafe's in Barnes & Nobles) there are in the outer boroughs.. I can only think of 4 in the Bronx. Amazing! 4 in the Bronx, 171 in Manhattan.

Make that THREE in the Bronx, 21 in Queens, 15 in Brooklyn, 9 in SI. Does that make sense?

I thought this was quite clever. Better than 95% of the user-generated claptrap out there.

and then there are people who refer to themselves as native washingtonians.

Bunch of "ASS-CLOWNS" ! Posted by; "Still Not Amused"

you know this guy could probably help some underprivileged youth with tutoring so that person can contribute to society. sadly, this guy would rather visit all the new york starbucks.

Tutoring?! Reprimand the Starbucks employee?! What the f#@k are you people talking about? Has your minutiae filled blogging tactics left you so embittered and cynical that you can't simply watch a video without manipulating its content into your own self-indulgent political rampage.

He went to 171 Starbucks...in one day! That sh!t is hilarious! Hooray for Mark Malkoff!!

The first three minutes are filler.
The next seven minutes are whining.

There. I've saved y'all TEN MINUTES. Go do something productive.

I would have watched that video had I not been instantaneously repelled by the Green Day music. Few things are worth that kind of torture. If I wanted to hear horrible music and be reminded of the banality of our stupid consumer-driven culture, I'd go watch television.

Here's the real news: 171 Star$ in 20 hours = 8.5 stores per hour = an average of just 7 minutes per store -- 171 straight times. How the hell did he pull THAT off? Anytime we have to pull in because my wife won't make it through the next few hours without a four-dollar coffee, seems I'm sitting in the parking lot for at least twice that.

just my two cents, but i AM the guy who shot it. It is real. He did consume PART of each purchase in the store (they were not always coffee) and it was done on bicycles and the car helped a lot. There are about 10 stores that are open 24 hours and several till 2am. We spent about three weeks going over the route. It is all real.

I think he missed one. There is a starbucks right by the Target over the bridge between the Bronx and Manhattan. That area is actually considered "Manhattan" in terms of zoning. And now that I think about it, he missed the one that is actually in Target as well. So that's 2! Sucker. Looks like he will have to do it again.

There is a guy named Winter who has been doing this for years--around the WORLD.
