THEATER: The second production this month to use Czech playwright Karel Čapek’s 1921 play R.U.R. as source material is Universal Robots, written and directed by Mac Rogers. Čapek’s play popularized the word robot, though he made clear that his brother Josef was the true inventor of the term. Rogers’s take on Čapek’s play, which explores the issue of robots’ rights in a robot factory, expands the canvas to include the brothers Čapek themselves as they struggle to create in their post WWI, pre-Nazi world.
