Yesterday, we noted that a body was found in the Hudson, off Houston and West Streets near Pier 40. It turns out that the body was of a Brooklyn man missing for a few days.
Michael Dukes' family had reported the 30-year-old missing last Wednesday, when he went to go to the store. Now the ME's office will determine the cause of death. And in a strange side story, it turns out that a 3-year-old and her friends were on a birthday cruise in the river and the kids saw the body because the boat was circling the corpse.
The birthday girl's father said, "At least 15 kids saw this. The kids were screaming, crying, 'Mommy! What's going on? What is that?' It was the cruise from hell. It was like out of a movie. You couldn't make this stuff up." And her mother added, "The adults were obviously curious to see the body floating because they couldn't really believe this was actually happening."

i wonder who the family is gonna sue?
Cool !
This sounds like a pre-credits segment on Law & Order. All we need now is a Lenny Briscoe quip (RIP, Jerry!) and we're set.
Although he's not credited in the Quotable Quotes books, we all know that Richard Lewis invented the phrase, "The (blank) from hell."
who takes 3 y.o.s on a river cruise?!?
3 year olds should only be allowed in restricted areas, such as Chucky Cheese or the sandbox. Yes, how dare these parents try and make a memorable and unique birthday for their child.
The boat circled the corpse for about 20 minutes?!!
#[6] it was REALLY a cruise for the adults--who brought along their kids. After all, a group comprised primarily of young kids running around, screaming, etc. on a boat is a recipe for disaster.
The entire cruise was a special one taylored to kids (balloons, face-painting, puppet shows, etc). We were not a part of the bday party, but I believe there was one on board. A few of us actually saw the body as we quickly passed it on the way back in to the pier. I think a few of the crew saw it too and they turned around to locate it again so that it could be confirmed that it was in fact a body and so that it could be reported to authorities. BTW, nothing cool about little kids seeing a dead body floating in the river, ... or a guy dying and ending up in the river.
This is such a non-story. Body's end up in the river all the time, big deal. It would have been cooler if the boat had ramed the body, or the body got caught in the propeller of the boat, or one of the kids fell over board and had to cling to the body until picked up..anything
Good question edEx. I'm sure they'll find someone. Maybe they can sue nature for creating the current that carried the body there in the first place.
Does anyone know why the boat circled? Was it to keep an eye on it until the police got there?
Wow what a shame it ruined a party. I know the family of the man that was found in the river. He was a young man with a good family and for everyone to be commenting on these poor little rich kids who saw a dead body. Shame on the people who have no respect for the mother that lost her child and for the family. The parents shouldnt even be allowed to comment on this. At least there kid is still alive. And they need to wake up to the fact that there is worse things in this world that there child will go through. Wake up people.....other people are losing there lives while your child just got a party ruined.
I write this comment ashamed, angry, and sad. I am the niece of the man who was found dead in the Hudson and "ruined" the $1500 party. Let me say first that I am ashamed for the Post and grown adults who make silly and insensitve comments about a life being lost. Who measures the worth of a life aginst a birthday party? My uncle was no degenerate! He was an exceptionally intelligent man with a degree in accounting and has a 9 yr old daughter. He was always pushing for his nieces and nephews to go to college. I mean my God he had just turned 30 last month! As tears roll down my face I re-read everyone's commnents and the emtional side of me wanted to write something nasty and ignorant but, my uncle was not like that and I will not let people who are heartless tarnish his memory. This was the uncle who never missed a birthday, graduation...nothing! You all should be ashamed of yourselves. My grandma has lost a son! her baby boy the last of her children and how dare you all!!! talk about him like this shame on you all! I love you uncle shawn.
