Beer of the Week: Red Hook Sunrye Summer Ale

4743.jpgAs you may have heard, July is American Beer Month, and we’re in full celebration mode here at Gothamist. Not that we really need a reason to throw back all sorts of delicious, nationally crafted microbrews but the occasion serves as a handy reminder to try something new and explore what’s out there. So exploring we have done.

The fruits of our pursuit have been quite abundant but there is one beer that has stood out so notably that we had to make it our beer of the week. The reason for us selecting the Red Hook Sunrye Summer Ale for this title is simply - drinkability. For those true brew enthusiasts who seek out intense bitter notes and heavy hop flavors in their beer then this is not the beer for you. While we also like beers with lots of character and flavor, in the summer a light crisp beer is just the taste we are after. The Red Hook Summer Ale is light, clean and has the personality of a well-made ale without the weight. It’s the ale that you could have a few of and not feel the need to switch to a mass-produced light beer. For the full dossier on this beer click here.

It feels only right to celebrate American Beer Month with a beer that epitomizes the spirit of this great country – something you can enjoy in abundance.

come on, people!! REDHOOK?!?! first off, they are controlled by anheuser-busch, and their beer quality has been slipping ever since.

this is GOTHAMist. can't you cite a good NYC brew to spotlight? give me some sixpoint sweet action, brooklyn blast or chelsea sunset red any day over that redhook crap. how dare you, gothamist!!!

Seriously. You have a perfect opportunity this month to highlight some New York beers and you pick a beer that started in Seattle and is now owned by the same company that brings us Bud Light?

I'd add Kelso Hop Lager and Sixpoint Apollo Wheat to #1's list above. They're both wonderfully drinkable, full of flavor, and brewed right here in NYC.

Yep Redhook is lame. Brooklyn, Sixpoint and Kelso are all better.

C'mon, Red Hook is a Brooklyn neighborhood! That counts!

Seriously though, try the Alaskan Brewery Summer Ale or Bell's Oberon - neither from NYC because the best beer isn't!

I thought Red Hook was brewed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire? Not that it's any different than Brooklyn Brewery . . .

I've heard AB is interested in buying Bell's brewery. any other craft brews AB bought?

Their quality isn't slipping, if it deteriorated- it already happened with Anheuser Busch owning a portion of their company. It's just the fact that a conglomerate like AB is involved that makes people think that RH tastes bad.
