Last Night's Action: Wins Almost Everywhere

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Mets 2, Reds 1: On a night when the Mets honored one member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, a future member inched closer to the 300 win milestone. It was Ralph Kiner Night at Shea Stadium and the Mets announced that their broadcast booth at Citi Field will bear the broadcaster's name. The TV booth at Shea is already named after Kiner, who played in the Majors for 13 seasons, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

While Tom Glavine won his 298th career game, it wouldn't have happened without the help of Lastings Milledge. Glavine handcuffed the Reds over eight innings, Milledge drove in what proved to be the game winning run in the 8th inning on a single up the middle. Glavine's outing - 2 hits, 1 earned run (a Brandon Phillips home run in the 2nd), 0 walks and 5 strikeouts - was one of the best by a Mets pitcher this season. The win was just Glavine's 3rd in his last 10 starts.

  • Yankees 6, Devil Rays 4: Chien-Ming Wang may not have been at his sharpest, but Bobby Abreu was really all the Yankees needed to defeat Tampa last night. Abreu had 5 RBI and has a post-All-Star Game hot streak going (5-11 with 7 RBI and 2 home runs). Wang allowed the D-Rays to jump out to a 3 run lead in the first, but the Yankees chipped away at that lead. Mariano Rivera closed out the game for his 425th career save, moving him to #3 on the all time save list.

  • Revolution 1, Red Bulls 0: The Red Bulls enter the MLS All-Star break atop the Eastern Conference standings. Andy Dorman of the Revolution scored his 7th goal of the season in the first half. In a change from the All-Star games of other American pro-sports leagues, the MLS All-Star team will take on the Scottish club Celtic FC.

  • Cyclones 13, Spikes 1: The Cyclones trounced State College, scoring almost all their runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Before the 7th inning, the two teams were deadlocked at 1 run a piece. Every batter for the Cyclones had a hit in the run scoring extravaganza.

  • SI Yankees 4, Lake Monsters 2: You gotta love the names of Minor League Baseball teams. The Lake Monsters, who play near Lake Champlain in Vermont, even have a monster as a mascot. Despite their mascot, they couldn't defeat the Yankees (not quite as original a name) last night.
