Issues of Black and White in Yankee Clubhouse?

Does Joe Torre, manager of the Yankees, treat black and white players differently? According to former Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield, he does. In an interview that is scheduled to air Tuesday on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumble. Sheffield makes some shocking allegations in the interview with Andrea Kremer, saying that he wasn't the only black player that had issues with Torre.

A transcript made available to Newsday, details some of the statements that Sheffield made:

"I know when I was there the couple of blacks that were there, every one of them had an issue with the organization," he says. Kremer asks him whether by "organization," he means George Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman or Joe Torre.

"They had an issue with Joe Torre," Sheffield says. "They weren't treated like everybody else. I got called out in a couple of meetings that I thought were unfair."

Kremer presses for details and he says, "He had a message to get across to the whole team, so he used me to get the message across."

And he never did that with white players? "No . . . I'd see a lot of white players get called in the office and treated like a man. That's the difference."

Kremer asked Sheffield whether he believes Torre is a racist. "No. I think it's the way they do things around there. Since I was there I just saw that they run their ship different."

Kremer points out that the Yankees' most prominent player is black. "Who?" Sheffield says. Derek Jeter. "Derek Jeter is black and white." Kremer then confirms that Jeter is half black and half white. "Exactly," Sheffield responds.

Kremer asks what the significance of that is. "There's really no significance. You just ain't all the way black," he says.

Besides talking about issues of race in the Yankees clubhouse, Sheffield also talked about his alleged use of steroids and his involvement in the BALCO case. While he admits to taking substances from BALCO, but still denies taking steroids, "In a million years, I don't care what anybody says, steroids is something you shoot in your butt. I do know that . . . The bottom line is steroids is something you stick in your butt –- period."

Although you have to question the source, the allegations that Sheffield makes are somewhat shocking. Especially considering how much players seem to respect Torre.

Until they find another player from the 20 seasons that Torre has managed the Yankees and other teams to corroborate the reports, I'm going to assume that this is a standard Gary Sheffield quote - completely full of shit.

Sheffield is a dumbass !

I believe shef. now if you told me bobby knight was racist, no way.
it's those passive aggressive guys you have to assume are the one's with the hidden agenda.
fourteen words.

Multimillionaires complaining about their workplace treatment is something I will never care about. Unless Torre called him the n word or beat him with a stick I just don't care. More likely Sheffield got picked on because he wasn't one of the team's franchise players (A-Rod, Jeter, Clemens) and he had an attitude problem.

wow. I hate fucking dicks like this. They assume that being angry, ghetto, tough and yelling and being loud are black traits and that if you tell them to tone it down then you are racist cause that's how black people are. These people ruin it for real black people. And real black people are just like everyone else.

yankees suck, time to get rid of the dagos.

I really hate this type of a story ! It's to vague to give a comprehensive reply . Here goes ...... I think what Gary Sheffield was trying to say was that during his tenure as a Yankee, There were Two different types of communication from the Manager . One involved "Certain" players viewed by the Manager to be an integral part of the team, The nucleus of sorts . Then there was the type that was labeled "Other" . The "Other" Type tipically received instructions from the "Messenger" Player, OR ""Go-between-guy "" aka, Derek Jeter . I'm not saying that Joe Torre has a problem with, OR Addressing Black players . I think that if there is some light to this story it has to do with the type of communication between Joe and his Black Players . What I mean by that is some people simply don't know how to Approach, And Conduct themselves around certain individuals . So to limit the chance that they may say, Or do something foolish they employ someone they feel can relate to that person . It doesn't necessarily make that person a racist, I think it makes them overly cautious towards "Other's . It brings to light a story about a College Football Commentator who Affectionately referred to a black player as a "Little Monkey" because he was to fast for the defense, & scored basically every time he touched the ball . The Commentator was obviously grilled for his comment and subsequently fired for it . If you listened to what he was saying then you knew he was just conjecturing that the player was trouncing the opposition soundly . Although he should have kept the "Little Monkey" part in his head, He wasn't a racist for making that comment . It was said out of passion for the game itself . Maybe if he would have thought about what he said before saying it he would still be a commentator for the team . Posted by; "Still Not Amused"

Sheffield used to complain that the Brewers - the team he started with - were racist also. Apparently if you don't bend down and kiss his ass, you're racist.

Sheffield is a racist...but nobody calls him on it because there is a BS perception in this country that black people can't be racist. He has said some very racist stuff about whites and latins, yet he gets a pass every time. Ridiculous.
