Brooklyn Cop Shooting: Suspects Brought to NYC

2007_07_ellis2.jpg

2007_07_bostick2.jpgToday, Dexter Bostick and Robert Ellis will be arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges related to the Monday shooting of two police officers during a traffic stop. Bostick and Ellis had fled NYC after the shooting, only to be captured days later in Pennsylvania. Yesterday, they were extradited from Pennsylvania, and lines of police officers watched them as they were escorted to and from the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn. Police officers are expected to appear at the courthouse also, in another display of solidarity with injured officers Herman Yan and Russel Timoshenko; Timoshenko continues to be in critical condition at Kings County Hospital after being shot twice in the face.

Ellis allegedly told officers that Bostick was the shooter and that he was the driver, but investigators don't believe him. A source told the Daily News, "He's saying he's sorry for the cop and his family, he didn't know what was happening, sorry he was in the car, sorry for everything. Mostly, he's sorry he got caught." Instead, police believe the Ellis may have been the ringleader; the Times reports that Ellis, Bostick and Lee Woods, who police arrested on Tuesday and believe is the driver, all met while serving prison sentences and may have been involved with other crimes.

The media has been detailing how Bostick and Ellis were apprehended in the the Pennsylvania woods. A U.S. Marshal spotted Ellis after an NYPD dog picked up his scent. Authorities used Yan's and Timoshenko's handcuffs on Ellis and Bostick; The Daily News has some stats about the manhunt in a sidebar. For instance:

- Distance Bostick and Ellis traveled on foot from Monday to Wednesday: 15 miles
- Law enforcement agencies: 14
- Police dogs: 7
- Age of Scooby, the NYPD bloodhound that hunted Ellis: 5
- Police helicopters: 4
- Amount of cash convicts spent on supplies: $30.64
- Cans of tuna they bought: 16
- Weight of Dexter Bostick, who wasn't able to run away from cops: 230-plus pounds
- Weight of Robert Ellis, who was able to flee and briefly escape cops: 150 pounds
The NY Times has an article about the vigil Timoshenko's parents are keeping at his hospital bedside. The parents of Yevgeniy Marshalik, the auxiliary police officer killed earlier this year, visited them; the Marshaliks noted that the Timoshenkos are not upset with the hospital staff, in spite of other reports.

And if Timoshenko dies, it will become a murder case, raising questions about the death penalty. NY lawmakers are already asking Assembly Leader Sheldon Silver to "convene a special legislative session to pass a capital punishment law" since NY State does not have the death penalty. A Justice Department official told the Sun, "It's highly unlikely that this is going to become a federal case. It's a solid state case. Nicely packaged, and tightly wrapped. I would see no reason why it would go federal at this point."

*"He's saying he's sorry for the cop and his family, he didn't know what was happening, sorry he was in the car, sorry for everything.*

He's only sorry because he got caught. This piece of shit doesn't even care about himself, how can anyone expect him to care about others?

He bears no emotion and should be caged for life.

--

To the officers, I pray for a full recovery...

Where's Al Sharpton and his 'outrage'. Oh right. He's only mad when non-blacks do something wrong.

Other than that...the use of the injured officers' handcuffs on these criminals was powerfully symbolic.

Apparently Ellis begged for the police not to shoot when they caught him. Ironic. Life in prison won't work for these guys, they will be considered HEROES. NY State hasn't executed anyone in decades, so i don't hold hope that it'll be used in this case. Maybe they'll "die" in custody.

user-pic

I pray for both officers and the three suspects. I hope they get a fair trial.
I don't ever recall seeing any emotion when the racist NYPD cops shoot and kill an innocent person before, too. guess there's not much difference and just the same. (old song, but with a different beat)

user-pic

How ironic if the Legislature convening a special session to pass the death penalty for these clowns is the reason congestion pricing also passes in the same session.

user-pic

hero's to who? other rapists and killers? huge impact...

"all met while serving prison sentences"
where is the death penalty when u need it?

user-pic

Say what you will, it's a hell of an arrest by Darryl Strawberry and Kevin Nealon.

Kudos, gentlemen.

user-pic

Enough about Al Sharpton already! Change the goddamn tune already...

user-pic

I am generally not an advocate of the death penalty, but this case may be the exception.

AL sharpton: they were framed

i think u owe al sharpton an apology #8

Greatest show on Earth. If this doesn't show you there truly is a blue wall of silence and how different you'll be treated because you're a "regular" citizen, I don't know what would.
I pray for the three suspects, stay strong.

Look at them. Typical "gangstas." All attitude and cockiness when they're on the outside, with the baggy pants and oversize T-shirt ghetto fashion trying to tell the world how badass they are. But when they get caught, it's all gone and they're nothing but the scared nobodies they always were.

user-pic

No, no. It's Dexter BOSTIC, not Bostick. At least get the name right.

user-pic

#[12] those thugs are not what you referred to as "regular" citizens. They are career street criminals.

Your flippant characterization is an insult to the many decent and respectable citizens who live in Brownsville, East NY, BedStuy, etc. If you have some gripe with cops, that's one thing. But don't call those hoodlums "regular" citizens.

user-pic

They all have long records.
Parole doesn't work - they met in jail. It's like a clubhouse for future felony planning.

They will all claim to be "just" the driver.
These career street thugs were all ARMED in the car when the shootings started. The guns may also be implicated in other shootings.

Yeah these are the guys I want working in a car dealership with access to financial records.

user-pic

I didn't say they were "regular" citizens, the cops would call them perps or some other derogatory name.
I'm talking about the law abiding citizen who did nothing wrong, has a squeaky clean record but still treated like a criminal.
as shown during the RNC, the East village riot and critical mass.
I don't need to do anything because the actions by the NYPD speaks for itself. again, The RNC, the east village riot and critical mass. not to mention the new permit rules for walking and breathing air.
not to mention some with big mouths on nypd rant and uncivilservant.

user-pic

#12/17 you may be right about mis treatment of many regular citizens. But you'r really praying for the killers? I mean I think the cops overstep their bounds sometimes as well, hell even the idiot above who brought up a few cop's killing people as justifciation may have its followers. But the problem here is not that cops are over reacting, but maybe they under-react when regular people are killed. Plus, what kind of criminal "justice" system rewards someone for the lucky break that officer may not die, I mean he shot twice with intent to kill that should be punished the same as if he had killed him. Such an idiot system, and those who try to justify this are even dumber. Hell even Sharpton hasn't done his usual rant on these low-life's. Sorry #8, but you have to admit he crys foul a few too many times and never admits he's wrong, so it would not be totally out of character.

user-pic

Once again, the name is Dexter BOSTIC (check the NY Times), not Bostick. Please change it.

Geez, you took the time to find out the name and age of the NYPD bloodhound, Scooby as well as the no. of cans of tuna the thugs bought. So the least you can do is get the correct name of the perp.

IT'S BOSTIC, NOT BOSTWICK.

only a matter of time till karma comes along and balances everything out number 18.
only a matter of time. may not be today or tomorrow but it will.

The falling out is begining

From the Daily News:

By his account - which cops don't believe - he was at the wheel of the BMW when it was pulled over by cops. He also said he was stunned when Bostick started shooting.

"Dexter opens fire and everyone inside the car is screaming, 'Drive! Drive!'" Ellis told probers, according to a police source.

"He's saying he's sorry for the cop and his family, he didn't know what was happening, sorry he was in the car, sorry for everything," the source said. "Mostly, he's sorry he got caught."

Cops believe ex-con Lee Woods, 29, was really the driver.

I want to say that we are so happy that these men are in custody. we are praying for the officers because even though one is now at home he will still be haunted by what happened. I am also glad that we were able to be involved in the capture of several suspects. Our non profit canines For Kids, Inc. trained and donated the bloodhound Scooby to the NYPD. We love the people of New York and wish all of the officers and their families the very best. Police agencies interested in free trained K-9's will find us at www.publicsafetydogs.com

@6 and 9--Notice how the lynch mob only gathers when certain members of society kill certain other members of society? I was so angry when I read about this story and that the cop might die. But we should be outraged whenever anyone is killed, and our passions cooled by the justice system. The justice system is a TOOL that we've developed to keep us from going apeshit on one another whenever it feels right. Otherwise, light your torches, we're stormin' at midnight.
