WCBS 880 reports that an oil tanker, the White Sea, has run aground in the Ambrose Channel, which is a shipping channel south of Lower New York Bay, off Staten Island, Coney Island, Breezy Point and NJ's Sandy Hook. The Coast Guard says that there are no reports of injuries.
The 800-foot tanker is carrying 455,000 gallons of "low sulfur fuel oil", none of which has spilled. The Coast Guard says "the ship's crew deployed a containment boom in case anything were to leak," per the Staten Island Advance. Are containment booms anything like Kramer's rubber bladder idea? (No.)
The AP reports something went wrong with the steering system. Excellent!

Why isn't there more attention to this in the mainstream media? Ok, it's not leaking (yet), but isn't it a bit of a concern that there's a huge tanker STUCK / Run Aground just of shore?
And how does one go about getting it un-stuck without damaging the hull?
Wait for the high tide, then gentlly push the tanker off the sand bar with tug boats...duh!

And if that doesn't work, pump off some of the oil into another ship.
Most (all?) large oil tankers in use today have double hulls. This prevents oil from leaking even if the outer hull is breached.
All single hull oil tankers are to be phased out by 2010. Not sure what this ships configuration is.
The area where she ran aground is a sandy bottom...unless she was going really fast (doubtful while in a harbor transit), the likelihood of a hull breach is low.
Well, um, good on the tanker's designers for designing a ship that isn't spilling oil right now.
"And how does one go about getting it un-stuck without damaging the hull?'
High tide, dip shit.

The ship grounded at 6:30am...just 30 minutes from peak high tide. (High tide was at 7:04am) At 10am, still stuck.
Nice try, but you're the ignorant dip shit. Thanks for playing.
