EVENT: The New York Book Club at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum presents…"Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has Covered New York City". The panelists include "Hal Buell, longtime AP photo editor who put images of the Vietnam War in newspapers across America; Richard Drew, AP photographer who has covered New York events including 9/11; Edie Lederer, longtime UN correspondent and first woman to be the foreign chief of bureau; and Valerie Komor, corporate archives director of the AP."

Fun fact: The AP has been covering the news since 1846, when five competitive New York City newspapers wanted to pool resources to collect news from Europe.

6 to 8pm // Tenement Museum [108 Orchard St] // Free, rsvp Bookclub (a) tenement dot org

2007_07banksy.jpgTALK: Our Publisher Wants to School You in Street Art! Graffiti documentarian and our very own Jake Dobkin will be giving a presentation tonight called "Streetart: Artistic, Social, and Political Implications."

According to the NYPL, he will "explore recent trends in the international graffiti scene, with special emphasis placed on artists living and working in New York and Los Angeles. The lecture aims to describe the methods and tools of current street-artists, examine the work of the most prominent practitioners, and discuss some of the larger issues surrounding the movement."

Whatever. We just want to go to see if the Splasher shows up!

6:30pm // Mid-Manhattan Library [455 Fifth Ave] // Free

MUSIC: Spoon played a secret last-minute show at Virgin Megastore in Union Square last night, but if you missed it - they're doing another free show tonight. Stream their new album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, here, and if you like what you hear - head over to their free show tonight in Rockefeller Park.

7pm (show up early) // Rockefeller Park [Chambers Street & River Terrace] // Free

READING: You may have seen Rebecca Curtis's name in the New Yorker, McSweeney's, Harper's or more recently, on the bookshelf. She just put out her debut collection of short stories called Twenty Grand which is filled with "mostly female loners, outsiders and have-nots," she'll be reading from it tonight.

7:30pm // Barnes and Noble [267 7th Ave, Brooklyn] // Free

THEATER: The politically oriented Potomac Theatre Project, based in D.C., is finishing up their repertory run at the Atlantic Theatre with Howard Barker's No End of Blame, which centers on a Hungarian political cartoonist and his struggles with censorship in pre-WWII Soviet Union and England. The Times review is mixed, but we’re intrigued by the description of Barker as “an acid English playwright with a cult following despite being largely ignored by major New York theaters; [he] has a coolly cynical style that refuses to flatter [his] audience.” - John Del Signore

8pm // Atlantic Theatre Stage 2 [330 West 16 St.] // Tickets cost $18.

MOVIE: Once the hot sun goes down, head over to Pier 54 for free popcorn and Rocky Balboa. Tonight is the first night of the River Flicks series (check out the rest of the schedule here), and with this summer's theme being "Believe in Yourself!" what better movie to show? Well, maybe the original Rocky, or Rocky II, III, IV or V...

8pm // Pier 54 // Free

Libraries exist to archive and disseminate all sorts of ideas and information, not just ideas you, or any other person, finds acceptable. The free exchange of ideas without governmental interference, no matter how reprehensible or trivial those ideas might be, is essential for a healthy democracy.

Plus, the NYPL is not part of city government.

The NYPL is sponsoring an event on grafitti? What next a panel called "The Pretty Colors Houses Make When I Burn Them Down?"

What the hell is the city gov't doing glamorizing simple vandalism?

I hope the cops are there to record the proceedings and take into custody anyone who admits committing vandalism in NYC.

  • i've seen a lot of bad movies, but that rocky movie has to be one of the worst that i've ever seen.
