Police Search For Suspects in Double Cop Shooting;
One Cop is "Clinging to Life"

The police department has launched a citywide dragnet to find suspects who fired at two police officers during a Brooklyn traffic stop early yesterday morning. 23-year-old police officer Russel Timoshenko was shot twice in the head while 26-year-old police officer Herman Yan was shot in the arm and chest. A surveillance video showed that the cops were shot before they had reached the driver and passengers in the car. The Daily News' Michael Daly describes:

Footage from the surveillance camera mounted outside the Little Red Riding Hood preschool shows the green BMW SUV pulling over.

Then the radio car rolls up. Police Officer Herman Yan is the driver and, as in all car stops, he is delayed for the moment it takes to put the car in park and slide from behind the wheel.

Yan is just approaching the driver's side of the BMW when there is a sudden motion at the edge of the camera frame. That is his partner, Police Officer Russel Timoshenko, who has climbed out of the passenger side of the radio car a step ahead of him.

Timoshenko is now falling backward, having been hit twice in the face by gunfire that has suddenly erupted from inside the BMW.

The footage shows the flash of more gunfire directed at Yan. He responds by firing even as he is shot in the chest and left forearm. He is saved from dire injury by his bullet-resistant vest.

Yan and Timoshenko had run the license plates of the BMW and found that the plates were stolen from a Mitsubishi. A former lieutenant with the Arizona Department of Public Safety told the NY Times, "Traffic stops are the most dangerous thing a cop can do, by far. The officer rarely knows the true mindset or the potential criminal activity that the driver and passengers may be engaged in."

The police are looking for three suspects, including Dexter Bostic; according to the Post, Bostic is a "convicted rapist and armed robber from Queens" who "is on an intensely monitored form of parole because of his violent history." Plus, Bostic is a "salesman at the Long Island car dealership from which the BMW X5 was stolen." Not only that, but the police believe they have footage of him stealing the car from the lot.

Police found the stolen vehicle a few blocks from the shooting (which occurred at Lefferts and Rogers Avenues in Crown Heights Prospect-Lefferts Gardens). They also found three guns - a .45, 9mm and a Tech-9 automatic - nearby. The guns may have been used in another shooting. The Daily News reports that the police believe "Bostick took a silver Porsche from the lot early Sunday and used it to rob a 25-year-old man of his money, keys and gold chain in Jamaica, Queens, before shooting him in the thigh."

Yan is in stable condition; Police Commissioner Kelly said his bulletproof vest probably saved him. Timoshenko, however, is "dangerously brain-damaged" according to a source. Mayor Bloomberg said he spoke to Timoshenko's parents, "I can give them the thanks of a grateful city, but as a parent I can't come close to understanding their feelings." Timoshenko, a Staten Island resident, had immigrated from Belarus and dropped out of City College, where he was described as a promising student, to become a police officer and has been on the force for about a year. Yan, whose mother is a seamstress originally from Hong Kong, lives in Sheepshead Bay and has been on the force for three years. A friend said that while in ICU, Yan kept asking, "How's Russel? How's Russel? How's he doing."

Update: WNBC reports that a suspect is in custody, though it's unclear who the suspect is. And the NYPD named the men suspecting of shooting at the police officers: Dexter Bostic and Robert Ellis. The reward for information leading to the capture of each man is $32,000 per man.

It makes me appreciate the hard work, the higher IQ, the greater talent, and the better worth I have as an individual.

If I was a dumb jock, I probably would have "settled" for a NYPD job as well.

Get bent, [1]. What the fuck is wrong with you? "better worth"? You don't deserve to carry Officer Timoshenko's dirty socks with a mindset like that.

No. 1 - if your IQ is so high, why the hard work? I thought the smarter a person is, the less they have to work...

Do us a favor - don't call 911 when someone with less talent decides to assault/rob/harrass you.

Jen, this took place in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, NOT CROWN HEIGHTS. Didn't enough people state that YESTERDAY to persuade you to correct your information?

No. 1 go fuck yourself, repeatedly.

Bostic is a "convicted rapist and armed robber from Queens" who "is on an intensely monitored form of parole because of his violent history."

r u kidding me!!? 2 people r dead because this animal was paroled?!

uh, the dude was PAROLED?????? YIKES.

#1, he had the choice and ability to go to college, but pursued law enforcement because he felt it was his calling.

Timeshenko was a "star economics student". Sounds like he had the smarts, to me. Maybe he just wanted to help his community.

"At the same time, he was a serious and gifted student.

“He was very entrepreneurial,” Professor Trugman said. “He was an A student — he could have gone onto whatever he wanted to do. He could have had an M.B.A. — a very bright young man, very analytical.”

[1] You have hard work as an individual? Good luck selling that high IQ claim to anyone remotely interested.

Just once, can't someone say, oh he always wanted to be a cop because he knew his grades were not good enough for anything else.
Are all these cops "star jocks" " A Students" "valeditorians" and bicycle haters.

some people actually want to help other people, guest. that may be a foreign concept to you.

I hope when they find the slimeballs that did this they "resist arrest".

Bostic is a "salesman at the Long Island car dealership from which the BMW X5 was stolen."

Never trust car salesmen.

1 & 12 do us all a favor and kill each other - case solved.

It doesn't matter if that's the real reason he joined the police force. He's clinging to life now why would you want to bring up petty things about his past that have no bearing on today?

God Bless everyone involved, the 2 young officers and the Three suspects.

The "Times" did a story on a cop that just graduated from the police academy. She got her BA at Harvard and a MA in forensic psychology from John Jay. She said she wanted to be a cop because she wanted to make a difference and help her community. So, go figure #1 & #12.

#1 You are an idiot and I hope that your high IQ helps you out when you are in need of New York's Finest. I know many smart and intelligent people who are police officers and time and time again they say they do it to help others. Just remember, while you are sitting in a cafe reading The Nation, these people are protecting this city 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They do this certainly not for the pay, but because they care.

Also #1, why sign on as a guest? You might be intelligent, but certainly not brave.

it would be awesome if just for one moment in this country (and especially, it seems, in this city) we all stopped being cynical.

#1 and #12 I was friends with and went to College with Russel. He was an excellent student who decided to join the force to better a city that he loved. I hope the two you never need the assistance of those like Russel who made the ulitmate sacrifice so schmucks like you can post stupid comments to feel like your lives worth something.

atta girl, jen :)
anyway, this is really disheartening that instead of commenting about the event, or offering condolences, however futile, to the victims' families, you hags bicker amongst yourselves.
ignore the trolls, stay on topic.

In other news, more soldiers die overseas.

Um, is a paroled rapist etc allowed to sell cars? One would assume that is a job that allows one to see alot of confidential financial information about people and to get women alone in cars on occasion (test drive)? Sounds sort of odd that he would be allowed - hoping he was a broom pusher of some sort.
Best to the cops and I hope they pull through.
Then they can pick up #1 and teach him some manners.

It's stuff like this that makes every police officer say, "HEY! We're protecting you from these animals, don't give us a hard time!"

I often wonder if it is the inability or the unwillingness of the police to do their job all the time, without bias? I believe it is more unwillingness than inability, but I'm never sure. I really wonder where all the 25,000 cops we have are sometimes. I constantly see areas of anarchy breaking out with nary a police officer around to do anything. The rule of NYC is that there is no law. Laws only matter in cases of of liability.

It only takes one look at www.uncivilservants.org or www.nyc.mybikelane.com to figure out exactly what is going through a policeman's head: arrogance and pension money and that's it.

Sorry, I have compassion towards the police.

no kidding RC, notice in those sites they always say they love their job. don't you believe it when they bitch and whine about their job. they love the power they have over citizens.

#1 is trolling and also a fk-ing douche bag.

Just because a person is a cop does not mean their education or IQ is low. Nor does it mean they were or are a dumb jock. There are many officers in the NYPD with college, masters and Phd degrees.

How anyone like yourself seriously believes you have self entitlement to breath the air i breath is sickening.

I can only hope that one day it's a "dumb jock cop" that saves your life. Or if you're so deserving, maybe it will be a person with a high IQ and hopefully no life saving skills.

Gothamist: Why don't you monitor the comments on these posts? It's bad enough that this young guy got shot doing his job. But the idea that his friends and family have to know that there’s a website out there, which thousands of New Yorkers check each day, that is providing a forum for people to anonymously post insulting comments about him – a man I’d bet none of them have met – is awful to contemplate.

Obviously in a general sense the comment section serves a purpose. There are many times when I’ve learned about a restaurant or recipe or a show that I wouldn’t otherwise have known about by checking your comment section. But the fact is, all too often the people who are use the comment section use it for nothing more than ranting about a particular race, socio-economic group, or, in too many cases, police officers who by in most instances were just doing there jobs and found themselves in a news story.

I respect the right to free speech, but free speech really isn’t the issue here. This is your site and you control the content. It doesn’t take long to identify the mean-spirited or racists posts – we know you read every comment – and to just delete them.

I’m sure somewhere you’ve got a form letter on why you choose to keep your message boards open, but I can’t believe that you think the overall policy should always apply. For however much your comment section creates a ‘town green’ for New Yorkers to speak to each other the various issues of the day, the vitriolic posts have a serious chilling affect on people who would otherwise want to participate in the conversations you’re trying to foster.

I didn’t know this guy who got shot, but I think it’s awful what has happened to him and I don’t want to sign onto a site a love reading to hear that he was a “dumb jock” or any other nonsense. Please, whatever your rationale, take a minute to reconsider your open comment policy. You owe it to your readers.

"i respect the right to free speech...just delete them."

sorry guest #29, it is about free speech, as much as u may b bothered by it, the guests (u included) have the right to make whatever asinine comment they want, such as the stupid comment i quoted above. u can't hide from the truth: that there r callous, heartless, rascist people all around u. hiding guest comments or having moderators delete them just because they r rude won't change that. GrowTFU & realize what world u actually live in.

#29 = typical hypocfritical republican bullshit.

what the H E double hockey sticks is number 29 talking about?
It hurts my eyes! please make him stop.
I pray for all those involved, the 2 young officers and the 3 suspects.
a dumb jock won't save my life because I don't have a life, I'm already a dead loser. translation, I don't leave my apartment. the only way you'll find me is from the odor and by then it's too late, my friend.
that and I don't break the law. again, see above, I'm a loser. being in jail would be like disney land for a loser like me.

Gothamist should delete the first comment

#33 ditto. #1's comment is not free speech just like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater would not be considered free speech. #1 is just an ignorant, attention-seeking jack@ss.

Hey "zodak", u should have used the number "2" n-stead of the word "to" n ur ongoing, obviously 2 difficult 2 manage attempt 2 b kewl.
