There was a suspicious package in Times Square this afternoon. The NYPD shut down Times Square briefly as they investigated the object at 42nd and 7th Avenue. And the package turned out to be a red backpack forgotten by its Brooklyn owner. D'oh!
The city has heightened its security after the London and Glasgow incidents, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff affirms that decision. He told the Chicago Tribune's editorial board, "I believe we are entering a period this summer of increased risk... Summertime seems to be appealing to them... We worry that they are rebuilding their activities."
But he did say, "Our edge is technology and the vigilance of the ordinary citizen." Chertoff hasn't commented on NY politicians' complaints that NYC is receiving less anti-terror funding. Though New York will get more funding than last year, the $134 million is off the $207 million received in 2005. Representative Peter King said, "New York is by far the No. 1 terrorist target in the country, and no one else is even a close second. That's the reality. I'm disappointed and angry."

What great things did they do with the last $207 million they received?
Please remember not to pay attention to vague terrorist warnings.
Democrats remind me of Boone and Otter in Animal House.
"They can't exploit terrorism for political purposes. Only WE can exploit terrorism for political purposes."
Peter King is a Republican legislator, not a Democrat.
If I knew Chertoff's waist size I'd buy him a case of adult diapers, which hopefully would be a solution to his panty piddling paranoia.
"New York is by far the No. 1 terrorist target in the country, and no one else is even a close second. That's the reality."
Umm...I think Washington, D.C. might be a close second. Just a hunch. Stupid political posturing using terrorism as an excuse to get more pork money.
I'm sorry, but does anyone remember 9/11? The threat to NYC is real.
Yes, DC obviously faces some risk, but given its population size and different city dynamics, they need far less resources than NYC.
warnings are propaganda. if "the terrorists" do something, they'll do it and get it done large or small... that's just the nature of it. the US gov't when tracking and capturing terror suspects does it quietly...
israel, england, france etc do it the same way, who do you think we're learning from?
I'm sorry, but, what kind of dope forgets he/she was carrying a bag?
Chertoff is up to his usual tricks--whenever there is new criticism of the Iraq war, he runs out saying "we're going to be hit by the terrorists."
I'm disappointed to hear that the person that lost the bag was a Brooklynite. I can totally envision a tourist losing a bag, but a New Yorker? With all of the "please take all of your belongings"..."be aware of suspicious packages" etc. warnings, he/she should know better!
I can't remember where I read this, but apparently the bag was in front of the Reuters building, and only Reuters was reporting on the story initially, so there was speculation that the incident wasn't as serious as being reported.
Um yes, #7, of course we all remember 9/11. Do you remember that there were 2 targets in Washington DC as opposed to one in NYC? Do you also remeber the plot that was foiled in January 2000 to blow up LAX in LA?
NYC is not the only target, and it isn't the #1 target either. That would be DC.
