Did Someone Shoot a Dog For Barking Too Much?

2007_07_poochie.jpgThe ASPCA is investigating a strange case in Staten Island: Someone shot a Port Richmond Yorkshire Terrier, who was sitting on the front porch, with an air rifle on Tuesday. The dog died in surgery the next day.

Owners Michael and Marie Buckley told WCBS 2 they moved to Staten Island from Manhattan with Eddie the terrier after Marie's mother died so they could take care of her pets. The Buckleys say that Eddie would bark at passersby, but this past Tuesday Eddie's barking was followed by a yelp when he was shot. A veterinarian found that a single air rifle pellet pierced the dog's diaphragm and liver.

The couple had received an anonymous note a month ago threatening them if their dogs didn't stop barking ("Keep the dogs inside. Your dogs bark too much."), but the Buckleys threw it away. Michael Buckley said, "I didn't think the police would respond to an unsigned note about a dog barking." And you'd think the neighbors would call 311 or the police to complain - or maybe even speak to the Buckleys in person.

The ASPCA's Joseph Pentangelo said, "It's not only animal cruelty, it encompasses a lot of other crimes. Someone in the house could have been hit." And the Buckleys are offering a reward for information. The city's noise code was made official on July 1; fines to owners of barking dogs are now "$75-175 for a first offense if a dog barks for more than 10 minutes during the day or more than 5 minutes at night."

I'm surprised this post is missing an obligatory Seinfeld reference. Granted Kramer/Newman/Elaine didn't shoot the dog, but still...

Staten Island. What great place.

Staten Island. What a great place.

Port Richmond, Staten Island,
In the 1990s, the population was approximately 75 % white (mostly concentrated in the community's interior), 12 % African-American, 10 % Latin American and 3 % Asian. The housing consists primarily of older one-family homes and small lots — and unlike many other North Shore neighborhoods, there are no public housing developments in Port Richmond.

See what happens when you take fireworks away from the good citizens of Staten Island. They revert to guns.

Someone shot my cat with a pellet gun in New Canaan CT. The cat need x-rays for something unrelated and three pellets were visible on the x-ray in my cat's hind quarters. People suck. Even rich suburban white kids with pellet guns.

Well you know, don't you, that people live in SI to get away from all the city scum. :P

I have a neighbors cat that keeps peeing and shitting in my flower bed. Can I put poison in my flowerbed? It's my property right? so if the cat dies cause my dickhead neighbors let it loose in my yard it's their fault.

Is it bad that I don't feel terrible for the owners? Sucks for the dog, but if ppl are already telling you to keep the pup inside (and that shouldn't be a problem since it's a small dog) keep it goddamn inside until you take it for a walk.

Having dealt with idiot neighbors and their untrained idiot dogs, I totally don't feel sorry for the owners. Sure as hell their next dog won't be a barking nuisance! Or maybe they will hit the owners next time!

I doubt the person that left the letter is related to the person that shot the dog. It sounds like too drastic a move. Its probably some kid with a new pellet gun.

By the way - is it possible for animal trainers to train a dog to stop barking? If so - why don't more people do that in the city?

You're today's nominee for Worst Person In The World.

K. Olberman

Sure, it's possible to teach a dog to stop barking. Just get one of those collars that shocks them whenever they bark. But people in the city won't use them because they love their little mutts more than they care about their neighbors, so if the mutts are waking people up, that's just too damn bad for the people.

so I'm going to put poison in my flowerbed. Whoever lets their cat out to shit in my flowerbed will have a dead cat tomorrow.

I like to put auto anti-freeze ladened vienna sausages around my property, myself. The sweet smell of the anti-freeze and the appealing characteristics of sausages makes it a treat hard to resist.
it's k olbermann, not olberman.

There is never ever ever ever an excuse to kill a dog unless it is attacking you or someone else. Whoever did this should be shot with a pellet gun in the nuts. (Yes I am assuming it was a male, so there)

#16 - You mean except when the dog is barking, right?

"The couple had received an anonymous note a month ago threatening them if their dogs didn't stop barking ("Keep the dogs inside. Your dogs bark too much."), but the Buckleys threw it away."

Nuff said.

Bullcrud. Don't shoot the damn puppy. That person is worse than anyone who lets a dog bark. The reasonable solution is killing an innocent animal? Insane. No one shot those noisy little girls playing in the pool. You talk things over, what the hell is going on with people? Everyone has a gun and they use it to solve minor diputes.

user-pic

some people are fucking scum

It was an air rifle not a gun, not that the person should've shot the dog with anything.

user-pic

Oh geez, I just read the link that says the Buckleys have now hired a private investigator to find out who shot their dog.

A few sessions with a dog trainer/behaviorist would have been a lot cheaper and certainly more practical. (Of course I'm assuming that the dog was really a nuisance and that the individual who shot him was not some neighborhood crackpot.)

user-pic

a) there is never a reason to kill or hurt an animal for just being annoying...most people are more annoying than a dog could ever be...b) an air rifle is a gun, #21, it's just not powered by explosion...
