- Yankees 7 Minnesota 6: The Yankees showed some grit Thursday, overcoming another lousy start from Kei Igawa and a lack of clutch-hitting to get the win. Things looked great in the first couple of innings as New York rebounded from a two-run deficit take a 5-2 lead thanks to home runs from Cano and Cabrera. But, Igawa was awful again, giving the lead back in the fourth by allowing three runs to score with two outs. Igawa may have come with a $46-million price tag, but the Yankees can’t keep sending him out there every fifth day.
Luckliy, the Yankees had another Japanese star ready to bail them out, Hideki Matsui. Matsui hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give them the lead and Mariano survived a shaky defensive play in the ninth to nail down the save. Does taking 3-of-4 from the Twins mean the Yankees are back in the playoff chase? No, but it is a sign of life and that’s all we can look for at this point.
- Mets 6 Astros 2: John Maine was brilliant again, allowing only two runs over 7.2 innings and winning his tenth of the year while Carlos Beltran hit his 15th for the Mets Ramon Castro had three hits and 2 RBI’s as he filled in since Paul LoDuca dropped the appeal of his suspension. The Mets also put Carlos Gomez on the DL with a broken hand.
- Dynamo 4 Red Bulls 0: Stuart Holden had a goal and two assists as Houston cruised to the easy win.

If the Yankees have any hope of making the playoffs, they will need at least 95 wins. They have already lost 42 games. This means the most games from now till the end of the season that they can afford to lose is 25. Every loss gets them closer to that dreaded number and puts them that much deeper into the 2007 grave.
Agreed. No way the Yankees can catch Boston so they can only hope for the wild card. The guys on ESPN keep harping on the fact that the Red Sox play the Devil Rays about 16 more times this year or about 20% of their remaining schedule.
