July 4th Fireworks Dazzle in the New York City Sky

2007_07_fwbrk.jpg

It was rainy during the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, but that didn't stop the breathtaking event that rumbled and lit up the sky. The rain may have even scared off some spectators, though there were still plenty who wanted great views of the 40,000-shell extravaganza. From the Daily News:

One actual kid, Flory Joseph, 8, of the upper West Side, gave her mom an I-told-you-so look and said, "She didn't even want to come because it was pouring." Mother Meg Joseph, 51, shrugged and conceded, "It was worth it. It is the greatest show on Earth."
And in spite of the city's warning about illegal fireworks, the police did arrest many who were using them. In fact, five police oficers were injured while trying to break up some illegal fireworks going off on a street in Staten Island; WABC 7 reports that when the police approached a 25-year-old man setting off fireworks, 50-60 neighbors "quickly descended on them." About 28 people were arrested.

Mayor Bloomberg marched in Staten Island's Travis Fourth of July parade, where he said, "It's a great day for the United States, a day to remind ourselves about our freedoms."

There are some incredible photographs taken by readers on Flickr. Here are a few sets we've seen so far - TomVu's set from Brooklyn, fresh bread's set and i'mjustsayin's set over the East river- and keep checking the "gothamist" and "fireworks" tags because people have been uploading them.

Did anyone see how crazy the new williamsburg park got last night?
Cops locked people in the park right before the fireworks went off and wouldn't let outside people back in.... seemed like they were asking for a riot or something...
We were in the park and had to leave right before the fireworks since things got so crazy. Wonder who had the brilliant idea to lock the gates right before the fireworks... families were split up and the park was for the most part empty with everyone pressed up against the gates on kent avenue.

HHAHAHAHHA. Dumbassses!!! I just stayed at home and watched the Fireworks on mY 60 inch 1080p HDTV. They broadcast it in HD this year and it was even better than the FDR. You don't have the noxious fumes of the fireworks intermingled with hot garbage and the stench of thousands of people bunched together with their body odor. I don't have to be around poor black and latino kids who just hover and loiter and pickpocket your asses while you look in the sky at fireworks that are really too far away. HD is where it's at. Unless you have a isolated rooftop. Standing in the FDR is for losers.

I kinda don't even like checking Gothamist anymore because of the racist, ridiculous, and irrelevant guest comments. Come on - a picture of fireworks incites racist hatred in you, #3? And that article about the free-floating pool earlier this week turned into some racist bullshit too. Come on, Jen, Dave, etc. - can't you guys put an end to this? It's so offensive and has really gone overboard lately. Also it demeans the reputation of Gothamist since the racist guest commenters make it seem like the people who read Gothamist are of that sort. Please think about this.

i agree with #5.

Do you guys think I want to read the racist crap? We put the new comments system in place in order to encourage people to register as users, so if anonymous, troll-like comments bother you, you can turn them off.

Unfortunately, sometimes the comments come in a faster rate than we can control.

Maybe you can have a system where, whenever you see a racist comment, you can delete all of the text in the comment and replace it with (Deleted - Racism). If the comments don't get through, maybe they'll stop.

hate to say it but it takes two to tango,
stop posting stories that will incite these reactions and you'll see a drop. I have noticed more racist posting lately even without the "al sharpton" guy.
how bout some panda postings or more of those rescued kitty stories? what happened to the Gothamist mascot kitty contest? How are the staff's kitty's doin? updates please.
Number three is the classic internet tough guy racist, notice the caps and exclamation point. next would be the "muaaaaaahhhh" or "bwaaaaaah" whatever those are.

#8, I agree with you to a point, but it seems like some troll-y commenters just want to race-bait even on totally innocuous posts like this one. And I don't think Gothamist should suddenly stop writing about stories that mention incidents of racial injustice or hatred when they are a part of the city.

But I agree - I would like more cat and panda posts.

and #8, randolph is still kicking thompson's ass left and right in the cuteness category.

JC, It's not your posts that I'm concerned about. Your posts appear well meaning and support the underdog, never spiteful or mean spirited.
More pics of Randolph, didn't you just adopt him last year?

#11 if you really want to see pictures of randolph, there are more here than you'll know what to do with.

and yes, we got him last year. he's about 1.3 years old.

i think censoring is dumb. if people don't like it just turn guest users off. i don't thing jen wants to mommy this place 24/7.

sorry, jen
Randolph wins. big paws, blue eyes gets em every time.

Was anybody on the LIE or BQE during the firework display? I had the unfortunate opportunity to be stuck on the road because people with no regards for other people decided to just stop and step out of their cars to watch the fireworks. Don't get me wrong, I love the fireworks but the road is the road, keep it moving. If you want to enjoy the fireworks that's your right, but please pull of the road so people that need to get to their destination can do so(as that is THEIR right). Think about emergency vehicles that may need to reach those in need and can't do so b/c all the highways and streets are so backed up.
