Pencil This In

2007_07_arts_bio.jpgMOVIE: The L Magazine kicks off their summer movie series, Summerscreen, tonight at McCarren Park Pool. We're pretty sure we'll be attending most of these this summer (even though we feel there is a lack of horror filcks on their schedule). So bring something soft to sit on and head over tonight for the cheerleading film that introduced us all to spirit fingers, Bring It On. In two weeks: Dazed and Confused! Alright, alright, alright.

7pm // McCarren Park Pool, Williamsburg // Free

MUSIC: If you're in Manhattan for the night, BrooklynVegan points out a benefit show for the St. Marks Church. Meanwhile, over in Brooklyn...Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, The Donkeys and High Places fill out the lineup for tonight's Todd P show. CftPA consists of one man, Owen Ashworth, though he is usually backed by a band.

What What Where? doesn't ask as many questions as their name would lead you to believe. Basically, they just bring the dance rock, straight up and simple.

The Mystery of Irma Vep, a two man, eight character farce from 1984, is being revived again for two weeks only. The campy send-up of vintage Hollywood horror flicks whisks audiences away on a comic ride “from the foggy moors of Mandacrest Mansion, where vampires and werewolves lurk in every shadow, to the hidden tombs of Egypt, where mummies spring to life and cast their seductive spells.” Reviewing another revival for the Times in ‘98, the late Vincent Canby wrote that Vep moves “far beyond camp to achieve a kind of overview that effortlessly embraces nearly a century of American show business, [recalling] burlesque, vaudeville, Broadway farce of the 1920's and 30's, as well as the Golden Age of Hollywood.” – John Del Signore

8pm // Urban Stages [259 W. 30th St.] // Tickets cost $18.

READING: Don Mattingly, retired first basemen for the Yankees, will be signing his book "Hitting is Simple" tonight. According to our sources, "Mattingly finished his career with 2,153 hits, 222 home runs, 1,099 RBI, and a .307 lifetime average." So we're guessing you could learn a thing or two from this guy, who, incidentally, was dubbed "Donnie Baseball" by Kirby Puckett.

10:30pm // B&N [555 5th Ave] // Free
