An off-duty police officer riding his motorcycle in Inwood was fatally struck by a drunk driver in the neighborhood early yesterday morning. Newsday reports that 31-year-old Officer Alexander Felix was riding on Broadway at Dongan Place around 1AM when a minivan driven by Kevin Casado crossed over the double yellow line and "plowed head-on" into Felix. Felix, who had been waiting for the light to change, was hit so hard his helmet flew off his head and was "propelled into a parked car" (Daily News).
Felix was a three-year veteran of the police force, and he had also been an auxiliary police officer for eight years. Felix's wife is expecting a baby next month. Relatives said that he and his wife had spent the weekend painting the baby's room.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said of Felix's death, "This is a terrible tragedy. A fine young man. Another tragedy associated with driving while drinking." Casado's blood alcohol was 0.18, which is almost double the limit of 0.10. He was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and DWI.

"Casado's blood alcohol was 0.18, which is more than double the limit of 0.10."
should be ALMOST double, not more than double.
The actual limit is .08 percent.
DON'T RIDE MOTORCYCLES. If he was waiting in a car at that light he'd probably still be alive. You can be the best and safest motorcycle driver in the world and still get killed.
Yet another reason not to ride murdercycles.
Had the officer not died then, he most surely would have in the near future. You can't win.
yea, makes sense. blame the cop because he was riding a motorcycle.
like theres not enough taxis, buses and subways, idiots can't stop drinking and driving. pathetic.
Cops drink, too.
can't stop the drinking. must drink.
While it is the fault of the drunk driver for killing the cop here . I can't help but think that if the street in question weren't as curved as it is this accident probably doesn't occur . Why was this roadway configured this way ? Why didn't the DOT widen the street, OR configure the signals to omit traffic accordingly ? This whole situation is a sad reality of New York streets .
