As an educated, middle-class, working, professional, black woman, I MUST add my thoughts on the unfortunate downward-spiral of this particular blog. While some of these racist comments are sad, but true observations (of the ways in which SOME less fortunate/lower-income/financially and socially deprived individuals (mis)represent themselves), it's still not comforting to know that there are so many people (not just in NY, but everywhere) who honestly believe that stereotyping and generalizing are safe and scientific ways to classify any given race. ...Who believe that if you notice the (uncultured and "ghetto") behavior of a certain class/type/category of people, then it's ok to say that this MUST be the norm for "all of them"- ..regardless of their demographic, income, personal circumstances and misfortunes, upbringing, etc. So, holding this outrageously-ignorant process of racial categorizing/profiling as TRUE, then would it be safe to make the assumption that all white people (regardless of their individually diverse ethnic backgrounds and demographics: American, Polish, Russian, German, etc. Based solely on their skin) are toothless, red-necked, inbred, wife-beating, child-molesting, serial-killing, pointy-white-hood-wearing, ignorant, racists? ..I mean, becuause that's exactly the type of 'logic' that you're using to classify/de-humanize/categorize an entire race of black and hispanic people. ...And just in case you do not know the answer to my question (is it ok to make gross generalizations?): it's NO. It is absolutely NOT OK to make generalizations of an entire race based on stereotypes and selective observations of just a few poor examples. My family is very diverse and is comprised of people/in-laws of all races/colors/ethnicities/shapes/religions. And I even feel terrible for having to make such horid comments about 'white people' (above), as an extreme way to get my point across. It's high time that WE all stop being so closed-minded (aka ignorant and afraid of others who do not look/act/speak like 'us'), and face the real problem: Our fear to acknowledge our own insignificance and inferiority, when placed in the context of this vast, beautiful, diverse world in which we all live, ..and share (equally). It's not a contest. There's no race to prove which race is better/smarter/more worthy. The only contest should be the one we have with ourselves: trying to push to be the best that we can be, to do the most that we can, to make worthwhile contributions to society during our very short/insignificant time on this omnipresent/omnipotent earth.

Just when I think the racism in this country couldn't get any worse--I read an ignorant post about how poor blacks and PRs act in a city pool. As an educated black mother, it sickens me that some people think that all the stereotypes that they see on TV and movies about minorities are true. So I ask myself, just how smart are you, anway? You can't take the actions of some and then generalize about an entire group. It's dangerous, pathetic and not progressive thinking at all. I'm not sure where you came from before moving to NYC, but it was not diverse in culture or thought. So, as someone suggested, you should go back to where YOU came from. Now. No, make that right now. Wish I could call the movers and help you load that pea-brain onto the truck.

Trying to research the pool to bring my son and reading the comments made me decide that this is not the place for us. I also am an educated hispanic (and my son has been awarded the student of the year award for 3 years straight). The negativity and racist views that I have read really brought out the "GHETTO" in me. Like the other guest commented, we are here to stay...why don't you just move out of our neighborhoods. You WHITE guys are driving our rents off the hook and taking all the housing..

i live in brooklyn heights near the brooklyn bridge and brought my two young boys to the floating pool yesterday! we just had to see what it was all about! It was truly amazing! Clean, quiet, well-organized, plenty of folks working to keep things running in a smooth and VERY controlled manner...the beach is nice but not quite the same as the "real" thing...the pool, however, is gorgeous! lots of clean bathrooms, locker and changing room space, 3 lifeguards doing an excellent job AND THE VIEWS! Oh, THE VIEWS!!! This is yet another amazing thing do do and see in NVC and in dear, sweet brooklyn!! Don't let the summer pass without bringing your family to the floating pool!!

And further more.......this land was at one point before rich interest came in to the area of the NY PR and black community. There are still long standing communities of people of color in DUMBO (the gentrified name). If it wasnt for people who have been living here and are being moved out/displaced of their own communities y'all people would not have these trendy yuppy hipster spaces to call home. all the gentrifiers (which are definitely not just condo owners) should be more ashamed at taking part in a system that does put people out of their homes and communities and robs them of their human rights to housing, work, food and edu.

You know I'm an educated Puerto Rican woman as well and I'm sickened by the racist comments I've seen here. My family is diverse; from the lower-class to upper class. However, they have ALL raised us to treat people with respect, be well-mannered and to always be on our best behavior. It's not about your race or "class" its about how you were raised. Trust me there are a lot of "white people" who don't have any respect or manners in public. All you need to do is adjust your selected vision... It's because of all you ignorant people, our children will have to deal with racism everyday. I really feel sorry for you. But it's okay because God sees everything and he'll take care of you one way or another....

#7, sometimes being realistic can sound racist. Some people appreciate a calm dip in the pool without excessive splashing & screaming. One solution would be to allow only children & their parents on certain days and adults only on other days.

Do you know if poor black people will use this pool? I want to go but if they are there then I don't want to risk it. I know Brooklyn Bridge Park is full of whites but poor black people will take the subway to get there.
