Last Night's Action: Mets Can't Close the Deal

Phillies 5, Mets 3: Mike Pelfrey's appearance as a last-minute replacement for Oliver Perez didn't come out as planned, costing the Mets their sweep of the rival Phillies. Carlos Delgado continued his revival by hitting another home run. On the negative side, Aaron Heilman allowed two runs in another shaky relief outing. The Mets lead the Phillies by five and the Braves by four in the National League East.

A's 11, Yankees 5: Scott Proctor's attempt to reprise "The Bronx is Burning" didn't help Yankees pitching. Proctor burned all his equipment following Saturday's game, but on Sunday the hurlers picked up right where they left off. Andy Pettitte allowed nine hits and eight runs in 1 2/3 innings. With All-Star and Cy Young Award favorite Dan Haren facing them, the Yankees had a long afternoon ahead of them. They managed five runs off the A's ace but couldn't do better. That might have had something to do with Joe Torre's choosing to hit Robinson Cano in the three-hole. He went 0-for-5.

Storm 84, Liberty 53: Loree More scored 10 points, but she led the Liberty. That's not going to cut it. Shooting 32.8 percent from the floor doesn't help either.

Brooklyn 3, Aberdeen 2: Down to their final three outs, the Cyclones rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to stun the IronBirds. Yasmil Bucce had a two-run single that plated the tying and go-ahead runs.

Staten Island 7, Hudson Valley 5: The Baby Bombers don't wait around until the late innings to do their heavy lifting. Three in the fifth and four more in the sixth gave them a come-from-behind win.
