Last Night's Action: One Streak Ends, Another Grows

  • Orioles 4, Yankees 0: Roger Clemens had struck out a batter in 200 straight starts until he lost to the Orioles on Wednesday. Maybe it was the heat -- it was 97 at the first pitch -- but when Clemens last went without a strikeout, he only pitched an inning before leaving with an injury. The Yankees have now lost four straight games and have not looked good doing it. They have managed four runs in the last 31 innings. Erik Bedard became the latest lefty to master them. Fans will notice announcers no longer say how the Yankees lineup comes with no weak spot. Right now it has about six -- everyone but Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada. They'll send Chien-Ming Wang when they try to avoid a sweep.

  • Mets 2, Cardinals 0: They only played six innings, but that was enough when the umpires called the game for rain. Luckily the Mets struck in the first inning of the shortened game, with David Wright hitting a two-run homer off of Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes. The only thing more frustrating than having a game end after six innings has to be the feeling of a team with a big lead that can't get through five innings. Tom Glavine pitched one-hit ball before the game was called and picked up his 297th victory. The Mets have now won five of six.

  • Hudson Valley 2, Staten Island 1: This game got called due to rain after five innings, but not before Doug Waechter, formerly of the Devil Rays, could pick up the win. He's rehabbing after shoulder surgery. The Baby Bombers are probably hoping they could have gotten their four more chances at bat.

  • Brooklyn 9, Aberdeen 7: In another game that was shortened by rain, the Cyclones scored two in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a tie before the game was called.

I'm sorry: Hideki Matsui is NOT a weak spot?
I think this is a typo. Perhaps you meant to type Jorge Posada. I know their names are very similar, so your error is understandable. Next thing you'll be writing is how valuable Wil Nieves is to the team.

Prediction: Torre will be history by the All-Star break, Cashman RIP at the end of the season.
And, of course, the Boss...

Unless you have A-Rod on your fantasy baseball team there is no reason to watch the Yankees. They suck. And I don't think Torre is going to be fired. Sure there is the old saying that you "can't fire the whole team". But in today's reality you can. I would start trading for the future.

You're right. I meant Jorge Posada.

I've been a loyal Joe Torre fan for many years. I've argued against his firing on several prior occasions, including early this season. What has become clear to me is his lack of enthusiasm and questionable decisions when it comes to use of his pitching staff. Sure, he has been dealt a bad hand in that regard. But, we've seen enough blown close games to know that you don't go with a slumping pitcher when you're one run behind...or one run ahead. I agree that the team needs rebuilding. The short-term solution, the one that will salvage some respectability out of a lost season, will be new managerial blood.
I don't think Mattingly is ready, but how about Girardi?

No, you can't. Guaranteed contracts make it pretty much impossible. The Yankees' gaudy contracts aren't getting traded anywhere.

Yeah, I'm sure Derek Jeter would have no problem with taking orders from a guy who was carrying his bags five years ago.
