Flooding and Lost Power After Evening Storms

2007_06_lightning.jpg

Wednesday power woes weren't just for parts of the Bronx and Manhattan: Over 4,000 (or 8,000, depending on what you read) Queens residents were without power when last night's storm made its presence known. In fact, two hours after the MTA said LIRR service was a-okay after the Bronx-Manhattan power outage, the rain screwed up Long Island Rail Road track signals, causing hours of delays after service was suspended. In this instance, we feel bad for the MTA: You can't count on Con Ed or Mother Nature.

Some Queens homeowners experienced serious flooding; one woman told the Post the water "pushed open the door. I thought the world was coming to an end." Flash-food warnings were issued and actually remain in effect today through tomorrow as meteorologists expect more storms to come to the Queens and Westchester area.

There are still some residents without power NYC (most are in Queens). And WABC 7 reports that there are some subway issues, due to flooding - did any commuters find that to be the case?

I'm not so sympathetic to the MTA, thanks.

Weather happens, yes, but they closed Penn Station, ejected people onto the street in a torrential downpour, and refused to give us /any/ information. The cops there to "keep order" had no information either.

If there's a weather issue, just bloody /say/ so. Don't leave us stranded with absolutely /no/ information.

Don't be dissin' on Con Ed. This is just a little preview of what could happen if you people don't pay your bills on time!

there were also power outages in nassau county

The "dip" yesterday had nothing to do with elec usage. It might have just been a freak accident - lightning hitting a substation. Whacha gonna do?

And and Con Ed is peanuts compared to LI power bills. Yikes.

  • guest

Not at .21 per kwh, I'm not.

People elsewhere in the Nation are paying half that.

  • rodney

I guess people who didn't live through the outage last summer are willing to give Con Ed the benefit of the doubt. I am not.

The prolonged blackout in Queens was a result of catastrophic damage to equipment (caused by poor maintenance among other things). Yesterday's power problem was a "dip." ConEd sux, but c'mon! Apparently, it didn't have anything to do with the heat and load.

  • Reality Czech

Wait a second, didn't Con Ed just a few days ago say how they were ready for this summer, how there would be less blackouts than last year how things are going to be different and then WHAM! the first real hot humid days and what happens but thousands lose power.

    WTF?

Rodney - What EXACTLY are you outraged about? All you did was reiterate the facts and exclaim that you don't know why others aren't outraged. What is so outrageous?

    Egan, out.

Get over it, rodney. The outer boroughs are more exposed than Manhattan because our power lines are above ground while they are buried in Manhattan. More goes wrong when the weather gets bad. It's not a conspiracy by ConEd to force the other four boroughs out of New York City.

  • rodney

So let's get this strait, power was restored in Manhattan within a couple hours yesterday, but the people in Queens who also lost power did not get it restored? Why aren't people as outraged by this as I am? Who is holding conEd accountable?

4 train was ok today, and last night, leaving from the Bronx, I was ony 15 minutes for my 6:30 class located in Astor Place.

Excellent pic. Very War of the Worlds like, without Crazy Cruise.

V train was not running as of 6:50am this morning because of water on the tracks.

It was an Odd day. We went to dinner to avoid the crowd at 5:00pm but ran into Flash flooding on the F line...
