After a Day at Manhattan Beach, Murder on the Q Train

2007_06_qtrain.jpgYesterday evening, a 19-year-old was fatally shot on a northbound Q train. According to witnesses, Trevell Belton was shot as the train pulled into the Avenue U stop. Belton collapsed on the platform, while the shooter and his friend ran away.

The Post reports that the train was packed with teens leaving Manhattan Beach, where Belton had been visiting (it's unclear if the shooter had also been at the beach). An investigator told the Post that Belton and a shooter were arguing because they were wearing rival gang colors. Also, the investigator said the beach was packed because a radio station had encouraged kids to head out there to protest suggestions that the beach was being overrun by "thugs."

Which brings us to last night's Manhattan Beach community meeting. GerritsenBeach.net was at the Manhattan Beach Community Civic Public Meeting and notes that police presence at the beach was a big topic. Captain Vincent Stella of the 61st Precinct said 30-40 cops (including the "Plain Clothes Gang Unit") patrolled the beach yesterday; usually there are just 6 cops. Stella explained that he "had this man power based on a tip that because schools were ending there was going to be a large crowd going to the beach."

Interestingly, GerristenBeach.net also noted that he and a Post reporter were basically heckled for drawing public attention to issues in the community.

At this point two people, Dr. Oliver Klapper, a professor at Kingsbourgh Community College and Robert Gevertzman, CB15 Member, who were trying to see what I was doing all night, and never approached me or introduced themselves, started to harass me loudly. Saying I had no right to be there. Asking me if I needed permission to write down names and what people were saying. They continued with: “What are you typing? Why are you’re simulcasting the whole meeting, you have no right to do that.” When I told him my first name and said that this was a public meeting he started yelling “Who are you, where are you from”. The meeting who was now jeering me calling for my name and who I was. I replied with Dan from Gerritsen Beach. At one point I think I was told I was out of order.

The NY Post was there as was Courier life. I saw that the NY Post reporter was asked to stand up and ID himself, and then was accused by a few people of causing problems.

Well, this sounds like a call for even more bloggers to attend Manhattan Beach's public community meetings!

that show the locales they aren't thugs LOL.

Goes to show you, the majority of NYC teens ARE thugs.

That show the locales they aren't thugs.

Wow, way to prove the Manhattan Beach Community right. What a travesty over a stupid thing as "gang colors." I wonder if these kids complain that the "man" does this and that to them, when it may be that they do "it" to themselves. Whatever it is.

RIP to the young man, but really, this crap is insane.

user-pic

Stupid ass kids. Why don't they do us all a favor and just kill each other off.

user-pic

I thought this was about them trying to make that beach their own Private beach? With their own security force, the NYPD, and that no Tresspassing sign.
Isn't that what the blogger and the Post was trying to expose?

I think that the residence have the right idea of keeping the beach private. It is the only way to keep these "thugs" away, I wish they could do it in parts of Rockaway. I believe a melee happend on Beach 116th a few weeks ago. With school out and the summer starting, I pray for anyone going to any of the city's beaches.

Sorry, this is abit confusing - the kids were at the beach, or at the community meeting? The story jumps from the shot kid and thugs congregating at Manhattan Beach at the behest of some radio station to the community meeting and the blogger. Am I missing a connection?

One youth fires a gun so every young person who was out there is a "thug?" Are you people retarded?

user-pic

But it's not a PRIVATE BEACH! That's what this blogger and the reporter is exposing, how some communities are stepping over their bounds.
If they want a private beach, pay the city.

Can we stop making excuses for these kids. Sure one youth has a gun, however the reason the shooting happened was due to gang rivalry. Last I check a gang is not composed of one person but a group of individuals who are up to no good. So I am quite sure that there were many "thugs" out there at the beach that day.

thaaaaaaaaank you #11. the thought behind the response from #9 is the reason none of this stuff ever stops...

user-pic

Don't worry, he has six sibling to step up and replenish his gang's ranks.

The whole thing is ridiculous. The shooting had nothing to do with the beach or the community meeting.

Check out Sheepshead Bay Take on the whole thing.

#4: travesty ≠ tragedy

Thanks for the lesson; maybe you should be a Gothamist proofreader and/or photo policeman. To me, the over the top surreal burlesque of getting killed over "gang colors," if reports are correct, is a tragedy.

I don't know, I use to take the train out to Long Beach, where they charge $6 to enter the beach. All was very nice and well all day, familys, kids, young adults being normal. But around 5:30, you'd see a different crowd hanging around the boardwalk, just waiting for the 6pm no charge entry. It was what you could call a "thuggish" crowd... The second it turned 6pm, and the beach was free to enter, those kids would start wandering around in packs. Made me a bit uncomfortable to be honest.

user-pic

#9. and the next kid won't make two in total, it'll just be one again, right?

user-pic

Oh the sweet, sweet irony. Way to prove your point by shooting each other over the stuff you're wearing.

Might as well privatize the beach; it's a natural filter. You can do something like that - families with kids under 10years old = free, senior citizens = free, everyone else pay up.

...best example of irony since...

Protest Parachute Leap Ends In Death At Yosemite
October 22, 1999

A 60-year-old woman, wife of freefall photographer Tom Sanders, protesting restrictions on dangerous parachute jumping at Yosemite National Park plunged to her death from El Capitan peak Friday when her parachute failed to open, officials said.

Right, Dodgers55, because 1 alleged gang member needs a group of "thugs" surrounding him to discharge 1 firearm.

user-pic

Exactly what cushy suburb or fortified apartment tower do you live in, Moneda?

user-pic

To; #5, If they kids kill each other off then who will be here to work and pay for Ur Social Security ?

user-pic

#23,

If you're expecting those kids to pay for your social security, you won't live to see 66.

He're we go with the "alleged" crap. Of course he's a gang member. And quit with the nonsense of trying to pretend it was just one solitary kid and nobody else had anything to do with it. This stuff is happening just about *every day* in this city's housing projects. You're just not hearing it on the news. Sure, there's *one* shooter but there are dozens if not even hundreds of kids at each of these incidents. Whether he "needs" a group or not is irrelevant, point is there always *is* a group. Get rid of the group, prevent the shooting. Sounds simple enough to me.

TO ALL THE HEARTLESS PEOPLE THAT THINKS EVERY BLACK CHILD IS A THUG.WELL I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE.I LOST A FAMILY MEMBER TO VIOLENCES AND HE WASN'T A THUG.THESE ARE CHILDREN THAT HAS FAMILY THAT LOVES THEM. JUST LIKE YOU LOVE YOUR CHILD OR CHILDREN TO. NO ONE SHOULD LOST THERE CHILDREN TO VIOLENCES MY HEART GO'S OUT TO THE FAMILY OF THIS KID.I PRAY THAT GOD GIVES THIS MOTHER STRENGHT TO BURY HER CHILD.TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THOSE NASTY COMMENTS MAYBE YOU"RE LOST YOUR CHILD OR CHILDREN.AND THEN YOU WOULD KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO LOST A CHILD.LIFE IS TO SHORT WE SHOULD PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER AND STOP ALL THIS HATE.
