Last Night's Action: Ball Four

  • Baltimore 3 Yankees 2: From the multiple camera shots of a glum Joe Torre shown on YES, it was obvious he was in the ballpark tonight, but was he paying attention? After all, what other conclusion can you come to when Torre let Scott Proctor load the bases with one out in the ninth and still let him pitch with the game on the line and Mariano in the bullpen?

It certainly wasn’t because Rivera has been overused since he hasn’t appeared in a game since Friday. In fact, Rivera was warming up in the bullpen before the start of the ninth. Torre will probably say that he didn’t use Rivera because he would still need to get three outs in the tenth, but losing the game in the ninth with your best reliever on the bench is inexcusable.

  • Cardinals 5 Mets 3 (11 innings): The Mets sent it to extra innings by getting a walk and a double with two outs in the ninth, but they couldn’t get the final hit to win the game and Scott Schoeneweis gave up a home run in the 11th and the Mets defense allowed another run to score.
  • Brooklyn 7 Aberdeen 3: Dylan Owen was dominant, pitching five no-hit innings while striking out six.
  • Staten Island 8 Hudson Valley 5: Ryan Zink allowed only one hit over five innings, but the bullpen had to hold on after giving up five runs in the seventh and eighth
  • Sacramento 59 Liberty 46: The Libs continue to struggle after their hot start to the season.
